The target letter that former President Donald Trump says that he received over the weekend in special counsel Jack Smith’s federal criminal investigation into his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election mentions three statutes that the former president may have violated.

ABC News reported that multiple sources confirmed to the publication that the three federal statutes include: conspiracy to commit offense or to defraud the United States, deprivation of rights under color of law, and tampering with a witness, victim or an informant.

The letter does not give any details of how prosecutors believe that Trump may have violated the laws, the report said.

The report added that Trump’s allies and lawyers have been contacting everyone they know in Trump’s orbit who also could have received a target letter and it appears only Trump has received one.

“Deranged Jack Smith, the prosecutor with Joe Biden’s DOJ, sent a letter (again, it was Sunday night!) stating that I am a TARGET of the January 6th Grand Jury investigation, and giving me a very short 4 days to report to the Grand Jury, which almost always means an Arrest and Indictment,” Trump wrote on social media on Tuesday.

Smith was appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland in November to investigate both Trump’s handling of sensitive documents and his alleged efforts to overturn the election. The Washington grand jury is believed to be looking into Trump’s conduct in the time between the 2020 election and Jan. 6, 2021.
