President Donald Trump took a playful jab at Secretary of State Marco Rubio even as he praised his top diplomat for helping to secure the historic deal — between Israel and the Iran-backed terror group Hamas — under which all remaining living hostages were finally freed on Monday.
Trump referenced the contentious 2016 Republican primary — during which he&#8217;d clashed with Rubio and a number of others he now counts among his allies and friends — and joked, &#8220;Who the hell thought this was gonna happen, Marco?&#8221;

Trump Ribs Rubio In Remarks Praising Him For Deal: ‘We Really Fought It Out’

War Secretary Pete Hegseth dismissed several media outlets on Monday after they refused to sign off on the Pentagon&#8217;s new press policy — which they say violates the First Amendment and Hegseth says will put the Pentagon in line with the policy governing press on every other U.S. military installation.
The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/department-of-war-implements-new-guidelines-for-media-access-at-the-pentagon">new policy</a> was detailed in a memo in late May, and said in part, &#8220;All members of the press issued a Pentagon Facility Alternate Credential (PFAC), will be required to read and sign a new in–brief form outlining information security requirements, the new physical control measures, and Department of War expectations of their compliance with safety and security requirements.&#8221;
But several outlets have taken issue with the policy, and several have made it clear that their journalists will not sign the requisite forms.
Washington Post Executive Editor Matt Murray issued a statement on Monday saying, &#8220;Journalists from The Washington Post will not be signing the Pentagon&#8217;s new press access policy. The proposed restrictions undercut First Amendment protections by placing unnecessary constraints on gathering and publishing information. We will continue to vigorously and fairly report on the policies and positions of the Pentagon and officials across the government.&#8221;

Jeffrey Goldberg, Editor in Chief of The Atlantic, offered a similar statement: &#8220;The Atlantic&#8217;s journalists will not sign the Pentagon&#8217;s press policy. We fundamentally oppose the restrictions that the Trump administration is imposing on journalists who are reporting on matters of defense and national security. The requirements violate our First Amendment rights, and the rights of Americans who seek to know how taxpayer-funded military resources and personnel are being deployed. We will continued to cover matters of defense, war, and national security independently and fairly.&#8221;
Again, Hegseth responded with a waving hand.

The New York Times also issued a statement through Washington Bureau Chief Richard Stevenson: &#8220;Journalists from The New York Times will not sign the Pentagon&#8217;s revised press pass policy, which threatens to punish them for ordinary news gathering protected by the First Amendment. Since the policy was first announced, we have expressed concerns that it constrains how journalists can report on the U.S. military, which is funded by nearly $1 trillion in taxpayer dollars annually. The public has a right to know how the government and the military are operating. The Times is dedicated to pursuing the public interest through deep, fair reporting and an unwavering pursuit of the facts.&#8221;

A number of other outlets — including a few that skew to the political Right — have made it clear that they are not on board with the policy either, citing some of the same concerns.

Hegseth Dismisses Media Outlets That Won’t Sign Off On Pentagon Press Policy

Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-VA) has lost some ground following her recent debate with Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears (R-VA) as the two are vying for control of the governor&#8217;s mansion.
During the debate — which came just over a week after a text message scandal embroiled another Virginia Democrat, Jay Jones, as he runs to replace state Attorney General Jason Miyares — Spanberger repeatedly dodged direct questions or clammed up entirely as she was pressed on whether or not she&#8217;d walk back her endorsement of Jones.

When asked directly by the debate moderator to say whether she&#8217;d known about the texts before they went public and whether she&#8217;d still endorse Jones, Spanberger ignored the endorsement question and complained about the political motives of the people who had released the texts.
The moderator pressed again, asking for a &#8220;yes&#8221; or &#8220;no&#8221; on the endorsement, and Spanberger once again did not answer, saying instead that the final decision would be up to the voters and that all of the candidates would be responsible for running their own individual races.

In the text messages in question, Jones had openly advocated the assassination of a political rival — then state House Speaker Todd Gilbert (R) — and suggested that the only way Gilbert would ever change his political positions would be if he and his wife were forced to watch one of their two young children die. Spanberger had condemned the comments immediately, but had also stopped short of withdrawing her endorsement.
Earle-Sears also posed the question to Spanberger, who stonewalled her and refused to even look at her while she was asking the question.

Virginia Gubernatorial Race Heats Up As Democrat’s Debate Strategy Falls Flat

Veteran CNN international anchor Christiane Amanpour claimed that she believed Israeli hostages — released on Monday after just over two years in captivity under the control of Hamas terrorists — were likely treated better than Gazan civilians as Hamas and Israel waged war on each other.
Amanpour argued that the hostages, to Hamas militants, had more value than civilians did because they could be used as leverage in negotiations. She left out the fact that Hamas had killed a number of the hostages outright, leverage or not.

Former Secretary of State Antony Blinken attempted to credit his boss, former President Joe Biden, with laying the framework for President Donald Trump&#8217;s historic deal in Gaza — the deal that has so far secured the release of all remaining living hostages and will, if followed, end the war between Israel and the terror group Hamas.
Blinken, who was serving as the nation&#8217;s top diplomat when Hamas militants breached the Israeli border and slaughtered more than 1,200 men, women, and children on October 7, 2023, was part of the initial efforts to reach a ceasefire and the return of some 250 hostages who were also abducted on that day. And while he did give President Trump nominal credit for getting an agreement across the finish line, he made it clear that he believed Biden deserved praise for taking the first steps in that direction.
&#8220;In Gaza today, the guns are largely silent. If all goes as planned, the remaining Israeli hostages will return home. Palestinians will get the relief they desperately need and deserve. Nothing can erase the pain and loss of the past two years. He then laid out the reasons he believed the deal had finally come to fruition — beginning with the fact that Hamas had been &#8220;finally and fully isolated&#8221; but failing to acknowledge the Trump administration&#8217;s active role in enforcing that isolation. Under President Biden’s watch, we secured the release of 135 hostages and, in January 2025 we handed over a ceasefire with Israeli forces pulling back, tens of thousands of aid trucks going into Gaza and a post conflict plan for a permanent end to hostilities.&#8221;
The real question going forward, Blinken said, was simple: &#8220;How can we build a lasting peace?&#8221; He then claimed that the Biden administration had developed the plan for Gaza, and that Trump had simply &#8220;adopted and built on&#8221; that.
&#8220;It starts with a clear and comprehensive post conflict plan for Gaza. It’s good that President Trump adopted and built on the plan the Biden Administration developed after months of discussion with Arab partners, Israel and the Palestinian Authority,&#8221; Blinken said.
Trump was neither convinced nor impressed by Blinken&#8217;s claims, and said so to reporters aboard Air Force One. &#8220;Everybody knows that&#8217;s a joke. They did such a bad job. This should&#8217;ve never happened. This wouldn&#8217;t have happened. That was weak leadership, terrible — and the same thing with Russia,&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;Everything they did was the opposite of what you should&#8217;ve done.&#8221;

Antony Blinken Tries To Give Biden Credit For Teeing Up Trump’s Gaza Deal

President Donald Trump left for Israel on Sunday to celebrate the deal he&#8217;d brokered just days earlier between Israel and Hamas, the terrorist group responsible for the brutal massacre on October 7, 2023. In the days since the agreement was reached, the litmus test has been a simple one: who is willing to give Trump credit for the work he&#8217;s done — and who isn&#8217;t?
For those who don&#8217;t spend their Sunday mornings glued to the television — and their Sunday afternoons attempting to dig through a week&#8217;s worth of network and cable news media spin — The Daily Wire has compiled a short summary of what you may have missed.
While there were some on both sides of the political aisle who were willing to acknowledge Trump&#8217;s role in securing a deal to bring the hostages home and ultimately end the war entirely, others tried to qualify his success — or even omit him from the conversation.
Vice President JD Vance, of course, was firmly in Trump&#8217;s corner as he made the rounds on the Sunday morning shows. On ABC&#8217;s &#8220;This Week,&#8221; he spoke with anchor George Stephanopoulos about phase one of the deal and the return of the last remaining hostages held in Gaza.

Vance took a similar tone with &#8220;Face the Nation&#8221; host Margaret Brennan on CBS, telling her, &#8220;The president is actually traveling to the Middle East, likely this evening, in order to meet them and greet them in person. It&#8217;s a big day for their families, but I think more importantly, it&#8217;s a big day for the entire world.&#8221;

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty also spoke to Brennan and expressed confidence in Trump&#8217;s deal. &#8220;We are very hopeful that the first phase will be completed in all honesty,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We are in full contact with the Palestinians, with Hamas, because it’s all about, of course, releasing the hostages and for Israel, releasing some of the Palestinian detainees.&#8221;

Senator Chris Murphy, however, couldn&#8217;t bring himself to directly credit Trump with the win — even when asked point blank by Brennan whether the deal marked something upon which he could agree with the president.
&#8220;I congratulate the negotiators on getting this done. There&#8217;s no politics about this moment,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But you watch those devastating images of what Gaza looks like today, and it&#8217;s both heartbreaking and infuriating that this deal has been on the table for over a year. So again, this will be a good week, but as you have reported, there are big issues to come. Israel is not fully pulling out of Gaza. There is no clear path forward on what the security and governance force is going to look like inside that country.&#8221;

CNN anchor Dana Bash also asked her guests whether Trump deserved some credit for securing the deal. Senator <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/he-worked-this-out-senate-dem-admits-trump-deserves-a-lot-of-credit-for-gaza-deal">Mark Kelly</a> (D-AZ) told her that Trump &#8220;should get a lot of credit&#8221; for making it happen.
&#8220;I think he should get a lot of credit. I mean, this was his deal,” Kelly replied. “He worked this out. He sent [Middle East Envoy] Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner over to negotiate this. And so far, it’s gone well. Hopefully, the hostages get released here — might not be within 24 hours — but certainly, I think, by Monday. And that’s progress. And now we’re going to have to see what happens next.&#8221;

Former President Joe Biden&#8217;s National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan was also quick to agree that Trump had earned credit by securing the ceasefire. Bash recalled Kelly&#8217;s interview and asked Sullivan whether he agreed that Trump should be lauded for getting the deal across the finish line. &#8220;Of course he does,&#8221; Sullivan said.
