President Donald Trump revealed what he believed would ensure he was the last Republican president of the United States: the failure to pass the SAVE America Act.
Trump addressed the issue with Lt. Governor Dan Patrick (R-TX) on his “Lt. Dan Podcast” on Wednesday, saying that if Republicans failed to get the measure across the finish line, they would more than likely be sealing their own fate.
Trump began by noting that Democrats, if they regained power, would likely continue to push for statehood for both Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. — creating four more senators and up to six House members in one fell swoop, most of whom would likely lean Democrat.
“And you’ll never have a Republican president again,” Trump warned, adding, “On the other hand, if we pass SAVE America, and we have voter identification with photo and if we have, as an example, a simple thing like place of birth, you know it would be nice to have — where were you born? Were you born in the United States of America, right?”
Trump went on to argue that far more Republicans would win if votes were limited to only those who could prove that they were born in the United States.
“But if the Republicans aren’t smart, you’ll end up with Puerto Rico — where, by the way, Republicans get 3% of the vote. Washington, D.C., Republicans get 3% of the vote, so it’s not like you’re going to turn it over,” Trump continued. “It’s radical left ideology, and you’ll have four more senators, and you’ll have eight to ten more Congresspeople, and you’ll never ever have an election. … I’ll be the last — think of it, I will be the last Republican president if that happens.”
“And that’s not hyperbole,” Patrick interjected.
“And it would be an unforced error because you can stop it,” Trump concluded.
The SAVE America Act, in addition to requiring proof of citizenship for voter registration, would also drastically limit mail-in balloting to only those affected by illness, disability, travel, or military service.
