In comments condemning the anti-Israel and anti-Semitic rhetoric of Democratic congresswomen Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib on Tuesday, President Trump suggested that any Jewish American who votes Democrat is showing either “total lack of knowledge or great disloyalty.” The comment has been widely condemned for its echoes of the anti-Semitic “dual loyalty” trope often directed at Jews, including by both Omar and Tlaib. In response to mounting backlash, including from multiple Jewish organizations, Trump posted a quote from a conservative radio host that’s quickly sparked more blowback.

“Where has the Democratic Party gone? Where have they gone where they are defending these two people over the state of Israel?” Trump said in reference to Omar and Tlaib in comments in the Oval Office on Tuesday. “I think any Jewish people that vote for a Democrat, I think it shows either a total lack of knowledge or great disloyalty.”

The comment prompted widespread condemnation, particularly from pro-Democratic Jewish organizations, including the Democratic Majority for Israel and the Jewish Democratic Council of America, the latter slamming Trump for “continuing to weaponize and politicize anti-Semitism for his own perceived political gain.”

On Wednesday, Trump posted a series of tweets in apparent response to the wave of criticism over his “great disloyalty” comment. First, he posted a quote from conservative radio host Wayne Allyn Root describing Trump as loved by Israelis like he’s the “King of Israel” for being “the best” American president for Israel “in the history of the world.” Root also suggested American Jews who don’t like Trump “don’t even know what they’re doing or saying anymore.”

“Thank you to Wayne Allyn Root for the very nice words,” Trump wrote before quoting Root: “President Trump is the greatest President for Jews and for Israel in the history of the world, not just America, he is the best President for Israel in the history of the world … and the Jewish people in Israel love him like he’s the King of Israel. They love him like he is the second coming of God … But American Jews don’t know him or like him. They don’t even know what they’re doing or saying anymore. It makes no sense! But that’s OK, if he keeps doing what he’s doing, he’s good for all Jews, Blacks, Gays, everyone. And importantly, he’s good for everyone in America who wants a job.”

“Wow!” Trump wrote in response (tweets below).

Trump followed those posts with another tweet calling out Tlaib and Omar’s support of the anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement. “Rep Tlaib wants to cut off aid to Israel. This is the new face the of Democrat Party?” wrote Trump. “Read the AOC PLUS 3 statements on their hatred of Jews and Israel. Check out Rep. Omar (the great people of Minnesota won’t stand for this).”

Trump’s tweet-quote has already sparked more pushback, including from The Jerusalem Post, which slammed Trump for tweeting a quote “saying American Jews don’t know what they’re doing.”

“President Donald Trump shared a quote on Wednesday by Wayne Allyn Root, a conservative radio show host, calling him ‘the greatest president for Jews and for Israel in the history of the world,’ and saying that American Jews ‘don’t even know what they’re doing or saying anymore,'” the Post’s report begins.

The report goes on to note that “a huge majority of American Jews vote Democrat, with Pew Research finding that 79% of Jewish voters cast ballots for Democratic candidates for the House of Representatives in 2018.”

“Roughly eight-in-ten Jewish voters (79%) cast their ballots for the Democrats, higher than the share who did so in 2014, but somewhat shy of 2006 levels. (Data on Jewish voters were not available in 2010.)” a November 2018 Pew Research study found.
