In a series of social media posts that really got rolling after his “American Victims of Illegal Immigration” event last week, President Trump alternated between defending his administration’s handling of immigration and bludgeoning his political enemies on the Left for their hypocritical response to the issue they’ve consistently botched.
Among the tweets is Trump’s quote from a Drudge Report headline: “OBAMA KEPT THEM IN CAGES, WRAPPED THEM IN FOIL,” a reference to widely circulated images from the Obama era showing unaccompanied migrant minors sleeping under foil blankets in cages in detention centers that activists falsely attributed to the Trump administration. “We do a much better job while at the same time maintaining a MUCH stronger Border! Mainstream Fake Media hates this story,” wrote Trump.
Trump also took some shots at Democratic congressional leaders Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and trolled the #resistance and the “Fake News Media”:
On Monday morning, he called for stopping illegal immigration “in its tracks” by finally “building the wall” and bypassing the “complicated legal process”:
Prior to those posts, the president retweeted a post by White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who pointed out that the infamous TIME Magazine cover containing an image of a girl that was supposed to be the “face of the separation of families at the border” was in fact in an image of a girl never separated from her mother. The mother is a previously deported Honduran woman who brought her 2-year-old against her husband’s will illegally into the country using human traffickers, who often abuse and abandon clients.
And those were not the only tweets by Trump about immigration over the last few days. He also made sure to promote his “victims of illegal immigration” event and his interview with Mike Huckabee, in which he planned to address the issue:
