President Donald Trump prolonged the feud between himself and the so-called “Squad” by proclaiming he will win Minnesota in the 2020 election in part because of Rep. Ilhan Omar’s (D-MN) anti-Semitic rhetoric.
“In 2016 I almost won Minnesota,” Trump tweeted on Tuesday. “In 2020, because of America hating anti-Semite Rep. Omar, [and] the fact that Minnesota is having its best economic year ever, I will win the State!”
The president narrowly lost the state of Minnesota in 2016 to his challenger Hillary Clinton. Clinton edged out Trump by less than two points; she obtained only 46.1% of the vote, while Trump won only 44.6%. Interestingly, voter turnout was down roughly two points in the state since the prior presidential election and nearly four points since the 2008 presidential election.
Trump has been involved in an ongoing quarrel with four freshmen congresswomen, collectively referred to as the Squad. The Squad, consisting of Omar, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), and Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), has been a recent target of the president for their socialist policy prescriptions and anti-American and anti-Israel rhetoric.
However, the Squad has been attributing racial motives to the president’s criticism of the progressive lawmakers, and the media has largely followed suit.
“[Trump’s] nightmare is seeing a Somali immigrant refugee rise to Congress. His nightmare is seeing he beautiful mosaic fabric of our country welcome someone like me as their member of Congress home to Minnesota,” Omar said after she arrived to a crowd of supporters after flying back home earlier in July. “We are going to continue to be a nightmare to this president.”
The president addressed Omar’s remarks on Tuesday responding instead that “[Ocasio-Cortez] plus 3 are a Nightmare for America!”
Omar and Tlaib became America’s first Muslim congresswomen when sworn into office in January. Along with Ocasio-Cortez, the three House Democrats have been embroiled in allegations of anti-Semitism and anti-American sentiments even prior to taking office.
Omar has defended her own anti-Semitic statements, such as ones invoking Allah to expose Israel’s “evil doings” as well as promoting age-old anti-Semitic canards such as that Jews’ support of Israel is purchased and that they have a dual loyalty to the United States and Israel.
Both Omar and Tlaib sided with Hamas in May after the Palestinian terrorist organization launched nearly 600 rockets into Israel from across the Gaza border in a 24-hour period. Hamas subsequently claimed responsibility for multiple Israeli deaths.
Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), who is seeking the Democratic nomination for president, responded to Trump’s comments and defended Omar.
“You’ll never win Minnesota, Donald Trump. I’ll make sure of it. Our state economy is strong because of our great workers and businesses,” Klobuchar said. “And the last time I checked, racist words and putting a congresswoman and her family in harm’s way aren’t very popular in our state.”
Klobuchar is polling at 1% on average, according to Real Clear Politics.
“We are confident that President Trump will win the states he won in 2016 and add even more to his column in 2020, Minnesota included,” Tim Murtaugh, the director of communications for Trump’s 2020 campaign told The Daily Wire. “The Minnesota economy is roaring in the Trump economy, with even lower unemployment than the already-low national average, reversing the problems of the Obama years.”
“We used to hear about people looking for jobs, but now we have jobs looking for people. Meanwhile, the Democrats are promising to raise taxes to pay for their massive government programs and propose a government takeover of health care, which would kick almost 3.5 million Minnesotans off their private health insurance,” Murtaugh continued. “The choice will be clear in 2020 and President Trump’s campaign will have all the resources it needs to win Minnesota.”
Omar’s office did not respond to The Daily Wire’s request for comment.
