On Friday, President-elect Donald Trump signaled that major change was coming to the way America approached the United Nations. Following President Obama’s decision to allow a UN vote declaring the holiest place in Judaism sovereign Muslim territory and all Jews living outside of pre-1967 lines illegal residents, Trump tweeted, “As to the UN, things will be different after Jan. 20th.” On Monday, Trump made another comment on the “Sad!” international body.
“The United Nations has such great potential but right now it is just a club for people to get together, talk and have a good time. So sad!” Trump tweeted Monday while vacationing at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.
Prior to the vote, the president-elect attempted to prevent Obama’s decision to abstain and thus allow the egregiously one-sided resolution to pass by publicly urging a veto along with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and working behind the scenes to get Egypt to withdraw the resolution, but to no avail. The Israelis now say they have “ironclad information” that not only did the Obama administration allow it to pass, the administration quietly helped craft the resolution and promote it behind the scenes.
Like all of Trump’s positions, his criticism of the UN has been met with a wide range of responses, some defending the UN’s peacekeeping record, others pointing to the UN’s lengthy record of failure and the influence of corrupt and tyrannical nations on its decisions, including the most recent resolution targeting Israel. Among those cheering the response of Trump and the Republicans, who have threatened to pull funding from the UN, is Daily Wire editor-in-chief Ben Shapiro, who condemned Obama’s “morally perverse” treatment of Israel:
Late on Friday, the Obama administration demonstrated before the world just how morally perverse they are, and why so many Americans can’t wait for their benighted perspective on foreign policy to become a relic of the past. With Obama’s silent urging and acquiescence, the United Nations passed a resolution essentially declaring the holiest spot in Judaism, the Temple Mount, sovereign Muslim territory, and determining that all Jews living outside of pre-1967 lines are illegal residents on sovereign Muslim territory. Obama did this on behalf of a unity government comprised of three terrorist groups – Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and the Palestinian Authority – and to the cheers of terror-sponsors like Iran.
Meanwhile, the Obama administration spoke words of empty nonsense as the Russian-backed Syrian regime continued its slaughter of hundreds of thousands just to Israel’s northeast.
Obama’s presidency has been a blot on the moral record of the United States with regard to world affairs, but his parting shot at Israel demonstrates his total animus for the Jewish state as a whole and his warmth toward the world’s leading terror-sponsors in Iran.
Thankfully, someone new arrives on January 20.
