Former President Donald Trump dominated the South Carolina Republican Party presidential primary on Saturday, defeating former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley in her home state.
The Associated Press and other organizations called the race shortly after polls closed at 7 p.m. EST due to a variety of factors that pointed to a “heavily lopsided contest,” the publication said.
The New York Times forecasts that Trump could win the state by up to 41 points based on the initial results that have come in.

“Wow, that is really something, this was a little sooner than we anticipated, it was an even bigger win than we anticipated,” Trump told a group of supporters after he was projected to win the state.
“I was just informed that we got double the number of votes that has ever been received in the great state of South Carolina,” he said. “So that’s pretty good.”
Trump spoke about the numerous problems that the U.S. has faced under President Joe Biden, including a historic illegal immigration crisis on the U.S. southern border.
“Now there’s a spirit that I have never seen. We ran to great races, but there’s never been, ever, there’s never been a spirit like this and I just want to say that,” he added. “I have never seen the Republican Party so unified as it is right now. Never been like this.”
