After a brief hiatus, during which time he appeared at another one of his packed-out, raucous rallies and tweeted out a major announcement on transgenders in the military, President Donald Trump got back to ripping Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Twitter Wednesday in what has become one of the key stories of the week.
“Why didn’t A.G. Sessions replace Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe, a Comey friend who was in charge of Clinton investigation but got big dollars ($700,000) for his wife’s political run from Hillary Clinton and her representatives. Drain the Swamp!” Trump tweeted Wednesday morning.
Trump’s public lambasting of Sessions really began last Wednesday, when the president told The New York Times that he never would have nominated Sessions if he had known he would recuse himself on the Russia investigation. Tuesday morning, things got even more tense, at least from Trump’s end. In a series of tweets, Trump ripped Sessions for failing to the investigate Hillary Clinton.
“Ukrainian efforts to sabotage Trump campaign – ‘quietly working to boost Clinton.’ So where is the investigation A.G.,” wrote Trump. “Attorney General Jeff Sessions has taken a VERY weak position on Hillary Clinton crimes (where are E-mails & DNC server) & Intel leakers!”
Trump also smacked McCabe, whose wife received big campaign money from a Clinton ally.
“Problem is that the acting head of the FBI & the person in charge of the Hillary investigation, Andrew McCabe, got $700,000 from H for wife!” he wrote.
Trump’s decision to publicly criticize Sessions has received mixed responses from conservatives, some sympathizing with the president’s frustration, while others have come to Sessions’ defense.
