President Donald Trump said that almost one million Americans would be getting $500 checks after being overcharged through fees under Obamacare.
Trump made the announcement on Thursday, saying the extra fees were collected during the Biden administration. The overcharges occurred through Obamacare exchange “user fees” that were added to insurance premiums, according to the White House.
“The last administration knew about this, and they studied it, but they kept the money. They just kept it. They never let anyone know. Our administration is doing the right thing and giving the money back to the people who were wrongly ripped off,” Trump said in a video released by the White House. “In many cases, these refunds will cover the entire spike in your insurance caused by Democrats, who solely work to protect big insurance companies. The big insurance companies own the Democrats.”
The checks are projected to be mailed out in October 2026. The refund will be sent to people in 30 states who did not receive premium assistance under Obamacare, according to the White House.
Trump used the announcement to push Congress to adopt his “Great Healthcare Plan,” which the White House says would lead to lower drug prices, greater price transparency, lower insurance premiums, and would “hold big insurance companies accountable.”
“We will stop all payments to big insurance and give the money directly to the people, who will then be able to buy better health care at a much lower cost and keep the money, and keep the difference,” Trump said Thursday. “We’ll have maximum price transparency and require all prices to be posted in plain, beautiful English.”
Trump’s pledge to send out the refund checks comes one day after he floated sending $5,000 “dividend” checks to every adult American citizen if Republicans keep the House and Senate following the midterm elections. The proposal could cost over $1 trillion if enacted.
“Here is my promise: If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000,” Trump said Wednesday night during his speech at the RNC midterm convention in Dallas.
