Transsexuals want to reclaim the narrative on gender dysphoria as a meaningful diagnosis from radical transgender activists who wish to eradicate it and other so-called “barriers” to sex change services.

In an open letter to 29 major medical organizations based in the U.S., a group of transsexuals (a term they prefer) belonging to the Gender Dysphoria Alliance (GDA) called for a shift toward evidence-based care and a rejection of ideologically and politically-driven narratives.

“As people with gender dysphoria, many of us transgender or detransitioners, we want to clear away the confusion and obfuscation surrounding our condition,” the letter reads. “For the safety and well-being of all trans and gender dysphoric people, we need our healthcare, especially our mental healthcare, disentangled from a well-meaning yet misappropriated academic philosophy.”

The letter explains that the postmodern philosophy called Queer Theory, which seeks to do away with biological categories based on the belief that they are oppressive and socially constructed, is where ideological narratives about transgender people arose that have filtered into mainstream culture in recent years. According to the letter, the view of “gender” being untethered from biological sex has been embraced by transgender activists who have managed to impose their beliefs into law and medicine. The letter argues that the beliefs taught in Queer Theory have infiltrated healthcare practices and compromised the safety of patients by prioritizing ideology over evidence.

“Activists have created confusion about what ‘trans’ is by couching it in an academic theory that deliberately obscures any definitive categories,” the letter continues. “In addition, they employ intimidation campaigns against any individual or organization that seeks clarity.”

Aaron Kimberly, a female-to-male transsexual, mental health clinician, and founder and executive director of GDA, is concerned that radical transgender activism is causing more hostility towards people with gender dysphoria throughout society — not more acceptance.

“I feel as though the trans population is being used in a larger political movement at the federal and international level and the resulting culture war has real-life consequences on the wellbeing of trans, gay and gender non-conforming people,” Kimberly told The Daily Wire.

Aaron Terrell, a female-to-male transexual and the Director of Operations at GDA, and colleagues were inspired to write the open letter after the Human Rights Campaign, GLAAD, and a number of other organizations and celebrities released a joint letter last week calling on The New York Times and other media outlets to “improve their coverage of transgender people and issues.” The joint letter included a list of demands urging journalists to “stop printing biased anti-trans stories” and to “listen to trans people.”

“I merely heeded their call,” Terrell told The Daily Wire.

The letter highlights the concern that teenagers, especially adolescent girls, may be influenced to adopt transgender identities through their peer groups and social media. The letter points to other suspected forms of “social contagion,” including the recent surge of adolescent girls developing tics with no known biological cause that experts have attributed to watching TikTok videos of influencers who claim to have Tourette’s syndrome.

“Our healthcare system is failing these young people, as well as people with gender dysphoria, by robbing us of evidence-based information about what our condition is,” the press release states.

“What we are given instead of an evidence-based explanation for gender dysphoria is a postmodernist philosophy that attempts to deny biological realities,” the press release continues. “This is a political maneuver that is at odds with clinical care.”

Gender dysphoria was always understood to be a psychiatric condition until recent years when transgender activists have pushed for a more “inclusive” definition that ceases to categorize it as a mental illness in order to “reduce stigma.” They have also pushed for little to no “gatekeeping” of medical transition treatments and lobbied to have therapy that doesn’t affirm their chosen “gender identity” banned in 20 states.

According to such influential organizations and medical institutions as Planned Parenthood, American Psychological Association, American Psychiatric Association, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, their websites now define “transgender” as an “umbrella term” that includes mere gender nonconformity, or the rejection of stereotypical preferences and behaviors commonly associated with one’s sex.

With the broadening of criteria, more children are in danger of becoming lifelong medical patients who might otherwise have outgrown their gender-related distress. There is evidence that roughly 60–90% of children who identify as transgender, but do not socially or medically transition will no longer identify as transgender in adulthood, and many will grow up to be gay adults.

A clinical diagnosis of persistent gender dysphoria since early childhood isn’t even necessary to receive irreversible medical treatments. At least 47 pediatric gender clinics in the United States advertise their services to “gender nonconforming” children, according to an interactive map provided by the Human Rights Campaign.

GDA’s stated mission is to inform the conversation around gender dysphoria and evidence-based care, while amplifying the voices of detransitioners and advocating for women’s sex-based rights. The letter currently has over 100 signatures, and others who have gender dysphoria are encouraged to sign.
