A far-left transgender organization faced backlash on Tuesday after releasing a highly controversial statement over Monday’s tragic shooting in Nashville in which a transgender person killed six people, including three young children, at a Christian school.

The Trans Resistance Network (TRN) said that they expressed their “deepest sympathies and heartfelt prayers” to the families of those impacted by the shooting.

The group then claimed that the killer felt they “had no other effective way to be seen than to lash out by taking the life of others, and by consequence,” themselves. Later in the statement the group said, “Hate has consequences.”

The group admitted that they did not know the individual or have “access to their inner thoughts and feelings” but claimed that being transgender is hard because of “anti-trans legislation, and public callouts by Right Wing personalities and political figures.”

The group demanded that news organizations “respect the self-identified pronouns of transgender individuals who come across your desk.”

After facing considerable backlash on social media, the group locked its Twitter account so that people could not access its statement.

The news comes as Metro Nashville Police Chief John Drake told reporters on Tuesday that the 28-year-old killer was receiving care for an “emotional disorder.”

Drake told reporters that the shooter, a woman who identified as a man, was under a doctor’s care for the undisclosed disorder, adding that “law enforcement knew nothing about treatment.” A source close to the family told The Daily Beast that the shooter was also autistic but was “high-functioning.”

The shooter legally purchased seven guns from five different stores, according to police. Her parents, who said they did not want her to own any guns, acknowledged that they knew she had previously sold a firearm but did not know she owned others. The shooter was reportedly hiding the weapons in her parents’ home.
