The transgender-identifying child of Rep. Katherine Clark (D-MA) has been dealt a year of probation after being charged with assaulting a police officer, vandalizing a monument, and other crimes during a Boston Common protest in January.

Under the terms of the deal, Jared “Riley” Dowell must perform 30 hours of community service, write an apology to the officer who was struck, and pay Boston back the cost of cleaning up the graffiti, according to 7News Boston WHDH.

Boston police announced in late January that a suspect, identified then as 23-year-old Jared Dowell, had been arrested after officers said they saw Dowell defacing the Parkman Bandstand Monument by spray-painting it with “NO COP CITY” and “ACAB” — an acronym for “All Cops Are B******s.”

The protest was taking place amid demonstrations in Georgia around the construction area of the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center, which critics have dubbed “Cop City,” and following the shooting death of activist Manuel “Tortuguita” Esteban Paez Terán.

“During the arrest of Jared Dowell, a group of about 20 protesters began to surround officers while screaming profanities though megaphones on the public street causing traffic to come to a standstill,” Boston police said. “While interfering with the arrest of Jared Dowell, an officer was hit in the face and could be seen bleeding from the nose and mouth.”

Prosecutors said Dowell was the one who struck the officer during the arrest, according to the New York Post. The report said Dowell was arraigned in court on charges of assault and battery on a police officer, vandalizing property, tagging property, vandalizing a historic marker/monument, and resisting arrest. Dowell pleaded not guilty and was released on $500 bail.

Clark, who is now the House minority whip, took office in 2013. Upon being sworn in a decade ago, Clark thanked her husband Rodney, and her three children, including Jared, a C-SPAN video shows. In 2021, Clark shared a photo in a tweet recognizing Riley and International Non-Binary People’s Day.

“Every person should be celebrated and free to live safely, regardless of their gender expression,” Clark said. “Today, Riley and I are celebrating #InternationalNonBinaryPeoplesDay with a reminder that inclusivity and acceptance make our entire community stronger. We see you.”

“Last night, my daughter was arrested in Boston, Massachusetts. I love Riley, and this is a very difficult time in the cycle of joy and pain in parenting,” Clark tweeted in January. “This will be evaluated by the legal system, and I am confident in that process.”
