Regular host Sunny Hostin argued in favor of businesses penalizing unvaccinated employees during Thursday’s broadcast of ABC’s “The View.”

Hostin was responding to reports that grocery store chain Kroger planned to charge unvaccinated workers more for their insurance premiums and was eliminating paid leave for workers who were diagnosed with COVID-19 if they were not vaccinated — and she argued that there should be consequences like that for people who chose not to get the vaccine.

“Okay, I know Christmas is coming but I have to start on a negative note, I’m very sorry, but it’s a warning for anyone who’s still not vaccinated, experts are saying that the Omicron variant is spreading at an alarming rate, okay, they keep reminding people that vaccines and masks are the way out of this,” co-host Joy Behar began the segment, adding, “How are we supposed to deal with these people who still refuse to get a shot or follow the safety measures like masks even, at least wear a mask?”

Co-host Sara Haines argued that anyone who was still refusing to get the vaccine probably had no intention of ever getting one — and then noted that she had gotten her booster the day before.

“I walked in the house and it was so cute, my son yelled, ‘Congratulations, he’s running towards me, I thought for a second that I forgot something that’s going on. I was like, ‘What do you mean, baby?’ and he was like, ‘Your shot, you’re now protected from the virus.’ It was so sweet how excited he was.”

“It’s sad that a 5-year-old can understand what’s going on —” Hostin interjected.

“Well, he doesn’t watch Fox News, that’s why,” Behar quipped in response.

“The country to me is going downhill,” Behar continued. “I was reading also of all the democracies, this is different topic, all the democracies in the country, all of them, we’re not in the top three. You know who’s in top three in the good democracies? The people we fought in World War II: Germany, Italy and Japan. Those are the three top democracies in the world right now. Imagine that. I never thought I would love long enough, which I have —”

“Is it our educational system? What is it?” Hostin asked.

“— to see us behind the Axis Powers in democracy,” Behar continued. “We fought to save democracy in World War II and they are beating us in democracy, it breaks my heart, it breaks my heart.”

Guest co-host — and ABC News Senior National Affairs Correspondent — Deborah Roberts pointed out that a lot of people just had COVID-19 “fatigue” and instead of just being scared every time a new variant emerged, they were just annoyed that America could not seem to put the pandemic in the past.

Behar brought up Kroger’s announcement and the plan to charge unvaccinated workers $50 more per month for their health insurance in addition to ending sick pay for unvaccinated employees who contracted COVID-19.

“There has to be consequences,” Hostin replied, saying that she agreed with what Kroger was doing. “Because this is a public health crisis. I’ve heard so many people say, ‘If you’re vaccinated why do you care if I’m not vaccinated?’ Because it’s becoming a superbug because you’re not vaccinated, because you’re not doing the right thing.”
