‘The View’ Blows Up Over Senate Dress Code: ‘Come In Buck Naked If You Want To’

The cohosts of ABC’s “The View” were split over the Senate’s recent change in dress code — namely that the traditional dress code requiring male senators to wear suit coats while on the Senate Floor for deliberations and votes would not be as strictly enforced going forward.

The change – largely presumed to be designed to protect Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) and his apparent refusal to abandon the hoodies and gym shorts he seems to love — provoked a wide range of responses from the cohosts.

Whoopi Goldberg kicked off the discussion, calling the move “really wonderful” for Fetterman and suggesting that the Republicans’ fixation on decorum in the Senate was the real problem. “If you don’t want to wear shorts and a sweatsuit, you’re not obligated to,” she said.

Joy Behar — a former teacher herself — compared the change to schools allowing teachers to dress more casually and argued that it had “sent the wrong message” to students. But with regard to the Senate dress code, she still complained about Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) for commenting on the issue. “He’s been dumbing down America for the past couple of years,” she said.

Alyssa Farah Griffin called on Republicans to let the issue go and leave Fetterman alone, but argued in favor of a dress code for elected officials.

Cohost Sunny Hostin also favored a dress code, saying that wearing gym attire on the Senate Floor was demeaning to the office. “You don’t wear jeans and you don’t wear hoodies and you don’t wear what you would wear coming out of the gym … it demeans the office,” she said.

Goldberg jumped back in, saying, “I don’t care what you wear as long as you get the job done! I don’t care! If that’s how he’s comfortable … I dress in what I wake up in.”

She went on to suggest that a dress code was actually a violation of Fetterman’s rights.

Sara Haines was also generally in favor of a dress code, saying that dressing up put people in a different frame of mind and showed a level of respect for the job at hand — but she also argued that Republicans were overstepping when they complained about the change.
