The DNC’s Biggest Donor Group? Those Without Jobs

The most likely employer listed by donors to the Democratic National Committee so far this year is actually no employer at all.

An analysis of donors listed by the DNC in its most recent federal election filing found that “not employed” was the top occupation listed in the filing, donating a total of $12 million so far in 2025.

Following “not employed,” some of the top occupations among DNC donors for 2025 include retired, attorney, physician, consultant, investor, professor, chairman, president, and CEO. 

By contrast, the top ten Republican occupations were retired, CEO, self-employed, chairman, founder, president, homemaker, entrepreneur, and investor. 

The donor profiles also show which states contribute the most. Four states appear on both parties’ top-ten lists: California, New York, Texas, and Illinois.

The Republican National Committee (RNC) gained the most donations in all four. California donors gave $6 million to the DNC but twice as much to the RNC — $12.2 million. New York Donors gave $2.9 million to the DNC compared to $4 million to the RNC. The pattern continued in Illinois with the RNC outpacing the DNC by $700,000. Texas gave $11.7 million to the RNC, compared with $1.5 million to the DNC. 

The DNC currently reports $12 million in cash on hand, while the RNC reports $86 million, revealing a $74 million gap between the two organizations. 

Additionally, the filings revealed $1.6 million paid to help pay down Kamala Harris’s 107-day campaign debt. She spent $1.5 billion during her run for the nation’s highest office. Her 2024 presidential campaign was notable for high-profile endorsements and performances by celebrities such as Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Cardi B, Jon Bon Jovi, and Beyoncé.

Despite financial constraints and $500,000 in outstanding loans, DNC Chair Ken Martin believes “there’s no such thing as an off year.” In a post on X, he highlighted the DNC’s commitment to hiring regional organizers and field staff across Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.

Martin joined CNN host Dana Bash on Sunday and discussed the state of Democratic fundraising. Bash said the party had been struggling with donors, but Martin disagreed.

“Fundraising is not going as poorly as you would suggest. We’ve raised a record amount of money in the first eight months of the year,” said Martin, who added that the main driver of funds was from grassroots contributions in small $5, $10, $15 monthly donations.
