Dr. Anthony Fauci suggested Friday that the main reason people were rebelling against vaccine mandates was the use of the word “mandate.”
Fauci said during a CNBC appearance that the government would likely convince more people to get the vaccine if it was a “requirement” rather than a “mandate.”
“Mandates-that’s a radioactive word. Requirements people seem to respond better to that. They work,” says Dr. Fauci. “We are never going to get out of this outbreak if we still have 50 million people who for reasons that are very difficult to understand refuse to get vaccinated.” pic.twitter.com/4378v2pzNe

“Mandates — that’s a radioactive word. Requirements, people seem to respond better to that. They work,” Fauci explained. “If you look at companies like United Airlines that require their people to get vaccinated, they’re about 99 percent vaccinated. The federal government, the federal workers, we have about 97% vaccinated, 99 percent compliant.”
“You know, one of the problems is we are never going to get out of this outbreak if we still have 50 million people who, for reasons that are very, very difficult to understand, refuse to get vaccinated when you have a virus that’s killed 800,000 Americans and caused 50 million infections,” he added. “So if people still do not want to get vaccinated, sometimes you have to, for the common good, make requirements.”
Former Fox News host Jedediah Bila objected, saying in a tweet, “Dear President Fauci, Here are possible reasons why some don’t get the vaxx: 1.Their docs recommend against it due to medical histories. 2.They did their own risk/benefit analysis & decided against it. 3.They had the virus & have provable immunity. 4.None of your d*** business.”
Young Americans for Liberty tweeted, “Dr. Fauci actually thinks you are so stupid that he can simply call it a ‘vaccine requirement’ instead of a ‘mandate’ and you will ignorantly comply. It’s as if he thinks he training dogs (RIP beagles). These are dangerous people with dangerous ideas.”
Judicial Watch’s Tom Fitton tweeted a reminder that in August of 2020 Fauci had said he did not see a vaccine mandate coming.

“I don’t think you’ll ever see a mandating of vaccine, particularly for the general public,” Fauci said during a town hall. “If someone refuses the vaccine in the general public, then there’s nothing you can do about that. You cannot force someone to take a vaccine.”
Fauci went on to say that there might be exceptions in certain areas, such as in a health care environment, where people might be required to get vaccinated before they were allowed to have contact with patients.
“When you’re in the medical sector, depending on the policy of a hospital, the hospital may say — if you refuse to take a given vaccine, whether that’s a hepatitis vaccine, or a flu vaccine or perhaps even the Covid vaccine, that you might not be able to have person-to-person contact with patients,” he added.
President Joe Biden said in December of 2020 that he did not believe it would be necessary to make the vaccines mandatory. “I will do everything in my power as president to encourage people to do the right thing and when they do it, demonstrate that it matters,” he said, adding, “My hope is they will then be inclined to say it’s worth the patriotic duty to go ahead and protect other people.”
