On Saturday evening, Texas officials at the State Preservation Board quietly and unceremoniously removed from the Texas State Capitol a Civil Rights-era plaque that misrepresented rudimentary Civil War history.
Since 1959, the Texas State Capitol had displayed a deeply controversial plaque erected by the Texas Division of the Children of the Confederacy. Entitled the “Children of the Confederacy Creed,” the polemical display expressly rejected slavery as the underlying root cause of the Civil War. The plaque read, in relevant part:
