A man stabbed to death in San Francisco on Tuesday has been identified as tech mogul Bob Lee. He was 43 years old.
The San Francisco Police Department responded to the 300 block of Main Street at approximately 2:35 a.m. after getting a call that someone had been stabbed.
Officers found Lee “suffering from apparent stab wounds,” the department said in a release. “Officers rendered aid and summoned medics to the scene. The victim was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Despite efforts by first responders and medical personnel, the victim succumbed to his injuries.”
Lee was the founder of Cash App and the former chief technology officer of Square.
Police said an investigation is ongoing, and no arrests have been made.
“Our dear friend and colleague, Bob Lee passed away yesterday at the age of 43, survived by a loving family and collection of close friends and collaborators,” said Joshua Goldbard, CEO of MobileCoin.
“Bob was a dynamo, a force of nature. Bob was the genuine article,” Goldbard added. “He was made for the world that is being born right now, he was a child of dreams, and whatever he imagined, no matter how crazy, he made real.”
Former UFC fighter Jake Shields tweeted: “I just found out my good friend was killed last night while walking him (sic) in San Francisco.”
“He was in the ‘good’ part of the city and appeared to have been targeted in a random mugging/attack,” he added. “F*** San Francisco.”

Twitter CEO Elon Musk responded to Shields’ tweet: “Very sorry to hear that. Many people I know have been severely assaulted.”
“Violent crime in SF is horrific and even if attackers are caught, they are often released immediately,” he added. “Is the city taking stronger action to incarcerate repeat violent offenders @BrookeJenkinsSF?”
