Comedienne Amy Schumer is going to have to eat her own words for Christmas. Within a day of her crediting her own boycott for tanking the Super Bowl half-time show, rapper Travis Scott was booked to play alongside Maroon 5.
According to ESPN, the six-time Grammy Award nominee will “be working with Maroon 5 for the first time when they perform on the Mercedes-Benz Stadium field in Atlanta. Other artists could still be added to the halftime show as well.”
Variety reports, however, that rapper Jay-Z will be trying to talk Scott out of performing at the half-time show over the NFL’s alleged mistreatment of former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
“Two sources also tell Variety that Jay-Z — who has been highly critical of the NFL over its treatment of former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick — is attempting to talk Scott out of performing, although reps either declined comment or could not immediately be reached,” reports the outlet.
Rapper Cardi B may also join alongside Maroon 5 and Travis Scott since she is featured on the Maroon 5 hit “Girls Like You.” Variety reported last week that Cardi Bo and Outkast’s Big Boi were in talks to join the show.
While Maroon 5 still has not officially been confirmed to play at the show, “multiple sources told Variety back in September that they would be the headlining act and no involved parties have denied it.”
“The group has come under intense criticism for taking on the gig, largely because it implies support of the NFL’s stance toward Kaepernick,” reports Variety. “For weeks, Maroon 5 had been struggling to find a black act to take the stage with them, with Cardi B, Outkast, Usher, Lauryn Hill, Nicki Minaj, said to be in talks with the group; Mary J. Blige and Rihanna are said to have declined.”
The booking of Travis Scott, which may or may not change depending on whether Jay-Z can persuade him out of it, could not come at a worse time for Amy Schumer, who announced in October that she would be boycotting the Super Bowl in solidarity with Rihanna to support Colin Kaepernick.
“Friday thought. I wonder why more white players aren’t kneeling. Once you witness the truly deep inequality and endless racism people of color face in our country, not to mention the policy brutality and murders. Why not kneel next to your brothers? Otherwise how are you not complicit?” Schumer wrote on Instagram at the time. “I think it would be cool if @maroon5 backed out of [the] super bowl.”
Two months later, Amy Schumer declared herself victorious in the boycott as the half-time show struggled to book a musical talent.
“No one is stepping up to perform,” Schumer told TMZ. “The snooty lil digs about me in stories about the Super Bowl halftime talent is such a yawn. All out of touch white guys annoyed by me standing up for what I believe is right.”
“I have done 2 Super Bowl commercials in the last couple years and I’m so stupid thinking my opinion would matter right? Well guess what? I may have made a difference. No one is stepping up to perform,” she continued.
