NewsNation host Chris Cuomo unloaded on a caller who suggested that American citizens should arm themselves specifically as a defense against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents who might come to their homes or places of business.
Cuomo pushed back against the caller’s suggestion — one that was also voiced by Cuomo’s former CNN colleague Don Lemon days earlier — arguing that in addition to being illegal, it was reckless and highly dangerous to take up arms against law enforcement officers who were acting in their official capacities.

“The advice that you’re giving, about not arming yourself if you’re confronted by ICE, is advice that somebody would give that’s not threatened by being confronted by ICE,” the caller began. “But what if ICE came to NewsNation and started rounding everybody up? You’re brown, they decide to detain you, and don’t give you an opportunity to explain that you’re a citizen and they want to take you and you don’t know what’s going to happen if you go with them. Would your advice be the same?”
“One, you’re assuming effect — ‘you don’t know what’s going to happen,'” Cuomo replied. “You’re suggesting they may kill you, they may do something bad to you. They are not a gan. They are operating under color of authority. So you’re suggesting to me that if an officer makes a wrongful arrest, that it is okay for you to be violent to them, that’s what you’re saying?”

“I’m saying what advice would you give someone that is being — that is under that type of threat?” the caller asked.
“I’m saying that violence against an officer who is operating with color of authority is stupid and illegal! And suggesting it is stupid and reckless!” Cuomo continued. “If that person has a boss and they’re in the media, they should be fired … I’m not telling you don’t bear arms, or don’t protect yourself, but just think about what you’re saying.”
Cuomo went on to give an example of a police officer coming to the door and saying they believe someone to be the person they’re looking for and making the arrest.
“You’re basically saying in that situation, you should be able to shoot them,” Cuomo observed. “It’s effin’ crazy, okay? It’s just crazy talk!”
“How could you ever want to suggest that people should be violent?” he asked.
Cuomo’s comments come just days after Lemon, speaking with Wajahat Ali, argued that non-whites should take up arms in case ICE agents paid them a visit.
