‘Stunning Number’: Gun Ownership Reaches Record High As Biden Admin Continues To Push Gun Control
A recent NBC News national poll revealed that a majority of respondents, 52%, said there is a gun in their household, up from previous years and a record number since the poll question’s inception in 1999.
Back in 2013, 42% of Americans said someone in their household owned a gun; that crept up to 46% in 2019.
“In the last ten years, we’ve grown [10 points] in gun ownership. That’s a very stunning number,” remarked Micah Roberts, from a Republican polling firm. Roberts co-conducted the poll with members of Hart Research, a Democratic polling firm. “By and large, things don’t change that dramatically that quickly when it comes to something as fundamental as whether you own a gun,” he added.
In addition to the NBC poll, a new Harvard poll showed that six in ten voters believe owning a gun is necessary for protecting themselves from criminals.
Attorney Jonathan Turley highlighted both polls while contrasting the results with the Biden White House and media allies’ push for more gun control measures.
“The Harvard poll shows that six in ten voters believe owning a gun is to protect themselves. Despite the strong anti-gun rights message from the White House and the media, the public seems to be moving significantly in the opposite direction,” Turley posted on X.
“The United States (by household) is now a majority gun-owning nation according to these polls. That could present an interesting dynamic going into the election in 2024,” he argued.
“While many rights are viewed as fairly abstract, gun ownership can give voters a tangible investment worth hundreds or thousands of dollars. Many have more than one gun. That gives them a real interest in a debate over limiting gun rights or banning weapons,” the attorney added.

President Joe Biden has made clear he’d like to ban assault weapons, high-capacity magazines, and require background checks for all gun sales.

In March, Biden leveraged the carnage from a mass shooting at a Christian elementary school in Nashville to push more gun control measures and criticize Republicans.
“Those children should all be with us still,” Biden said before ripping into Republicans. “I want you to know who isn’t doing it [supporting gun control], who isn’t helping, to put pressure on them.”

Earlier that month, the president issued an executive order in an attempt to crack down on the gun industry, “moving the U.S. as close to universal background checks as possible without additional legislation.”
