Some members of Kate Middleton’s senior staff have reportedly not seen the Princess of Wales since her abdominal surgery in January and subsequent recovery at home.

A few of Kate’s senior staffers haven’t been able to see or speak to her, and they didn’t even know about the surgery until it was announced, so it’s caught them off guard,” an unnamed source told US Weekly.

“Only a few people know what’s really going on, and they’re tight-lipped,” the source added. “It’s confusing and causing some concern.”

The source also shared that the princess’ recovery has been a “shroud of secrecy” and she’s only had a few visitors, including King Charles III and Queen Camilia, the outlet noted.

Another insider described the news of Middleton’s recovery as “very hush-hush.”

“Kate’s said she feels she’s entitled to heal and recuperate without all of this frenzied speculation,” a source told the outlet. “Neither Kate nor [Prince] William think her medical records should be for public consumption.”

“She’s trying not to pay attention to all the rumors and gossip, and William is doing his best to shield her, but it’s distressing,” the source added.

Speculation about Middleton’s health and whereabouts reached a fever pitch this week after Kensington Palace shared a family photo of her and her children in honor of U.K. Mother’s Day. However, hours after it appeared in publications, the Associated Press issued a “kill notification” on the photo it said had been “manipulated,” as previously reported.

On Monday, the palace admitted the photo had been edited. A message from Middleton on X read, “Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing. I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused. I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother’s Day.”

However, as many have noted, despite the apology, the palace has still refused to release the original photo. Middleton has been missing from public events since the surgery and was last photographed at Christmastime.

The Prince and Princess of Wales have three children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
