Some Democrats Still Want Impeachment, But Nancy Pelosi Is Arguing Against It

Some congressional Democrats are determined to find a reason to impeach President Donald Trump, but House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) appears to have become the voice of reason in the party.

Politico reported Monday evening that Democrats “sparred internally” during a leadership meeting in Pelosi’s office, where several members suggested the party start impeachment proceedings against Trump.

“Reps. David Cicilline of Rhode Island, Jamie Raskin of Maryland and Joe Neguse of Colorado — all members of Democratic leadership — pushed to begin impeachment proceedings during a leadership meeting in Pelosi’s office, said the sources,” Politico reported. “Pelosi and Reps. Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut, Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico, Hakeem Jeffries of New York and Cheri Bustos of Illinois — some of her key allies — rejected their calls, saying Democrats’ message is being drowned out by the fight over possibly impeaching Trump.”

Pelosi was then forced to quell impeachment desires in a Democratic Steering and Policy Committee meeting, Politico reported. The speaker told Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN), who demanded impeachment, “This is not about politics, it’s about what’s best for the American people.”

During this meeting, Cohen reportedly said former President Bill Clinton faced impeachment “over sex” and that Trump is “raping the country.”

Pelosi reminded Democrats in the room that there were still ways to hold Trump and his administration accountable, including the numerous investigations opened into Trump’s personal and professional life. Essentially fishing expeditions, Democrats are convinced they will find wrongdoings if they can get ahold of Trump’s finances and tax returns.

Pelosi also reminded Democrats that they had just received a court “victory” earlier that day when a left-wing judge ruled in favor of the House Oversight Committee’s demands to see Trump’s financial records. That judge, according to Ian Cheong at Human Events, previously donated to former President Barack Obama, who nominated the judge to his current position.

“What we said when we started is that these [investigations] will yield information to us. Today, we won our first case,” Pelosi said during the meeting, according to Politico. “We’ve been in this thing for almost five months and now we’re getting some results.”

The question in all of this is, after the Special Counsel report absolved Trump of colluding with Russia and did not call for an indictment over obstruction, on what are the Democrats basing their current impeachment demands?

The answer appears to be that Democrats want Trump impeached now because former White House counsel Don McGahn will not testify. Some Democrats are claiming it was the last straw and claimed Trump has tried to keep Congress from doing its job. Cicilline, a congressman from Rhode Island, claimed Trump continually impeded their inquiries.

“I think if this pattern by the president continues, where he’s going to impede and prevent and undermine our ability to gather evidence to do our job, we’re going to be left with no choice,” he said.

Just a reminder, the information and “evidence” they want is Trump’s private documents so that they can find a crime with which to charge and/or impeach him.
