This week, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, doing their level best to keep Californians out of Texas and Florida, (a move which no doubt delighted conservatives in both states) voted to ban official travel to Florida and Texas.
Supervisor Sheila Kuehl, who submitted the motion along with fellow supervisor Hilda Solis, ranted, “Considering the rampant rise of hate crimes and some pretty egregious conduct by jurisdictions across the country against LGBTQ+ youth and their families, this is not the time to be enacting more legislation designed to encourage more harassment and suffering,” as the New York Daily News reported.
Kuehl was apparently referencing Florida’s Parental Rights in Education law and Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s order for state agencies to investigate reported instances of “abusive gender-transitioning procedures” performed on children.
Kuehl charged, “That order in Texas is discriminatory, harmful, and deliberately cruel. … The law in Florida would perpetuate a culture of bullying, secrecy, shame, and fear. It’s just a position we take: We’re not going to spend money to go to your states. She added that the official ban “sends a message that we won’t support this egregious behavior.”
Solis echoed, “We know that there’s so much homophobia that’s going on right now that we have to do more. I’m here to stand up and say all voices count.”
Christina Pushaw, spokeswoman for Florida GOP Governor Ron DeSantis fired back, as the New York Post reported:
The woke bureaucrats running LA County are shooting themselves in the foot with their political grandstanding. This misguided policy is a punishment for LA County employees – not for Florida. Many of the tourists in Florida have visited us from states with mandates and restrictions, like California, to enjoy the freedoms and normalcy that Florida has become renowned for under Gov. DeSantis’ leadership. These are things that everyone can appreciate, regardless of their gender or sexual orientation.
In mid-March, California Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom begged Disney to relocate 2,000 jobs on a new campus in Florida back to California, tweeting, “Disney, the door is open to bring those jobs back to California — the state that actually represents the values of your workers.”

The Los Angeles Times noted, “Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products Josh D’Amaro announced the move last summer and noted that Florida’s lack of income tax and low cost of living influenced the decision.”
Pushaw responded to Newsom’s tweet, pointing out, “Ok! But maybe you should reflect on why they left in the first place… And why so many Californians are fleeing your crime ridden dystopia for free states like Florida. CA weather is better, but progressivism destroyed the middle class. Sincerely, A former Californian.”
