On Tuesday, Iran finally made good on its threats of retaliation after the American killing of terrorist leader Gen. Qassem Soleimani. In an operation the Iranian military subtly termed “Operation Martyr Soleimani,” Iran fired over a dozen ballistic missiles at two Iraqi bases with coalition troops, including Americans. No Americans were harmed.
Iran quickly signaled that this would be the full extent of its response, with Foreign Minister Javad Zarif tweeting, “Iran took & concluded proportionate measures in self-defense under Article 51 of UN Charter targeting base from which cowardly armed attack against our citizens & senior officials were launched. We do not seek escalation or war, but will defend ourselves against any aggression.”
