Shane Gillis used the F-word on live television Saturday night while hosting Saturday Night Live, then apologized twice before the broadcast ended.

The comedian, 38, played a defensive son in a Green Eggs and Ham parody on the episode. Mikey Day played his father. Andrew Dismukes, as Sam-I-Am, kept pushing the dish on him. Gillis stepped in to tell Sam-I-Am to back off, swore mid-line, them exclaimed “Jeez!” and waved to the laughing audience.

“Hey, what the hell is wrong with you?” Gillis said. “My dad said he doesn’t like green eggs and ham — drop it, walk away.”

“But he may like green eggs and ham!” Sam-I-Am replied.

“Bro, it’s a nonstarter. He told me — he said he doesn’t f*cking — jeez — like ’em!”

Day worked the slip into the scene. “You said a bad word,” Day told him in character.

“Yes, I did,” Gillis answered.

Day returned to it later, telling his on-screen son: “You’re a loser, and you said a bad word!”

As the sketch cut away, Gillis could be heard saying “Sorry about earlier.” He repeated the apology during the closing goodbyes.

Saturday was Gillis’s third turn as host. SNL announced him as a cast member in 2019 and dropped him days later, before he appeared on air, after a podcast clip surfaced in which he used a racial slur against Chinese people. He first returned to host in February 2024. His Netflix series Tires was recently renewed for a fourth season.

The FCC restricts indecent and profane broadcasts between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., with Saturday’s episode starting at 11:30 p.m. Eastern.

SNL has no new episode for the next two weeks. It returns on Halloween with Obsession‘s Inde Navarrette hosting and Gracie Abrams as a musical guest.
