‘Sexy Handmaid’ Costume Pulled After Significant Backlash

The “Sexy Handmaid” costume that took the internet by storm this week has now been pulled after significant backlash from feminists.

As DW’s Emily Zanotti reported, unveiled the controversial “Brave Red Maiden Costume” that lampoons the feminist dystopian show “The Handmaid’s Tale” by putting a sexy spin on the iconic red cloak and white bonnet. Behold:

The irony of a “Sexy Handmaid” costume is that it directly contradicts the feminist narrative about the oppression of women in the United States. Truly, if women have it as bad in the U.S. as the women in “The Handmaid’s Tale” (as many have suggested), then a “Sexy Handmaid” costume would not even exist …

Actually, the costume does not exist now, and not because a bunch of theocratic social conservatives decried its immodesty, but because feminists at Bustle said it’s “counterproductive to the cause.” How did we get here?

In a statement Friday, Yandy announced they will be pulling the costume, apologizing for any offense.

“Over the last few hours, it has become obvious that [the costume] is being seen as a symbol of women’s oppression, rather than empowerment,” said Yandy. “This is unfortunate as it was not our intention on any level. Our initial inspiration to create the piece was through witnessing its use in recent months as a powerful protest image. Given the sincere, heartfelt response, supported by numerous personal stories we’ve received, we are removing the costume from our site.”
