A self-described “incel” is facing life in prison after he pleaded guilty in federal court today for attempting to murder 3,000 women.

The Department of Justice said in a statement that Tres Genco, 22, of Hillsboro, Ohio, admitted to targeting and surveilling women at an Ohio university in 2020. He was arrested by federal law enforcement officers last year and has remained in custody ever since.

An “incel,” short for “involuntary celibate,” refers to a small group of men who harbor extreme anger and rage at women for what they believe in their minds as being rejected by them for romantic or sexual relationships.

“Thankfully, law enforcement partners working closely together prevented a deadly killing spree targeting women,” said Special Agent in Charge J. William Rivers for the FBI Cincinnati Field Division. “Genco’s hate-filled beliefs and actions were extremely dangerous and could have resulted in irreparable harm to our community and many precious lives. We urge the public to report concerning behavior to the FBI and local police to help prevent future violence.”

Genco said that he wanted to “slaughter” women “out of hatred, jealousy and revenge…” and referred to death as the “great equalizer.”

The DOJ said that investigators found a note from Genco that indicated that he wanted to “aim big” during his act of terror by killing up to 3,000 women.

Genco made a reference to a date in which another incel terrorist actually carried out his attack, killing six people and injuring 14 others back in 2014.

The day that Genco wrote his manifesto, he researched different sororities that were on campus of an undisclosed university in the state. The day that he “conducted surveillance” at the university in 2020, he also searched online for topics related to how to carry out “a shooting crime.”

When authorities raided the place that he was living, they found a firearm with a bump stock attached, loaded magazines, body armor, boxes of ammunition, and a modified handgun that had the serial number filed off.

The statement said that he pled guilty to a single count of attempting to commit a hate crime. The statement added that since the attempt involved killing other people, it was punishable by up to life in prison.
