A school board member in Virginia took his oath of office with his hand not on a Bible, but on a stack of books containing graphic depictions of gay sex.
Karl Frisch, who will become chairman of the Fairfax County School Board, swapped the Bible for books including “Lawn Boy,” “Gender Queer,” and “Flamer.” His male partner held the books as he placed his left hand on them and his right hand in the air.
“He was sworn in on a stack of the five LGBTQ-themed books most frequently banned by other school systems,” Frisch’s campaign said on his website.
In September 2021, nearly all Fairfax school board members except Frisch fled the dais as a mother read passages from the books. “What if I told you I touched another guy’s d***? What if I told you I sucked it? I was ten years old, but it’s true. I sucked Doug Goble’s d***, the real estate guy, and he sucked mine too,” read one passage from “Lawn Boy.”
A board member then tried to cut her mic, saying “there are children in the audience.” (Attendees told The Daily Wire they did not see any children at the late-night board meeting.)
The mother replied, “These books are in stock and available in the libraries.”
“Gender Queer” is a comic book featuring illustrations of a lesbian receiving oral sex on a strap-on dildo. FCPS kept it in libraries after saying it was a “a well-written, scientifically based narrative of one person’s journey with gender identity.” The book’s author, Maia Kobabe, said she does not recommend it for children.
A Daily Wire review of the autobiographical comic found that it shows a nonbinary teenager and young adult who says her “sexual fantasies involved two male partners” and whose sister tells her to “taste yourself,” leading her to put what she calls “vagina slime” on her finger. In her journey of self-discovery, Maia visits the headquarters of a porn company that produced films called “Public Disgrace,” “Bound in Public,” and “Hardcore Gangbangs.”

In the book, Maia is deeply disturbed and perennially unhappy, and ejects femininity in part because “I’m way too selfish for parenting.”

Frisch does not have any children, so his interest in schools is unclear, except as an avenue for LGBT activism and to advocate on the behalf of staff as opposed to the people staff serve. His partner is a choral director for the school system.
Frisch is a Democrat campaign consultant from California and has few roots in Virginia. He won his first term on the school board in 2019 after raising massive amounts of money by fundraising from out-of-state donors based on LGBTQ issues.
He has also styled himself as a victim because he is an atheist. He once gave an hour-long interview to the American Humanist Association, a group for agnostics. The video claimed that Fairfax County, a diverse and liberal D.C. suburb, was “targeted by religious extremists.”
“The religious nuts come out of the woodwork,” he said. “Fairfax has a history of being an epicenter for right-wing religious fanaticism.” Every member of the Fairfax County School Board is a Democrat.
A previous school board chair, Rachna Sizemore Heizer, took the oath of office on a copy of radical anti-American historian Howard Zinn’s book “A People’s History of the United States.”
