President Joe Biden is expected to announce his re-election bid on Tuesday — by video.
Numerous reports late last week have said Biden will make the announcement on April 25, which will be the four-year anniversary of his 2020 campaign launch.
The news comes as a new NBC News poll found 70% of Americans, including 51% of Democrats, think Biden, 80, shouldn’t run for re-election, with just 26% supporting the president.
Nearly half of those surveyed (48%) cited Biden’s age as their “major” concern with Biden running again. Another 21% said Biden’s age was a “minor” concern.
The poll also found that 60% of Americans — including a third of Republicans — think former President Donald Trump shouldn’t run in 2024.
“The president needs to reflect the age group in the country. They should both retire,” one Democratic poll respondent from Washington state told NBC. “It is someone else’s turn.”
In addition, just 41% of those surveyed approve of Biden’s job performance, while 54% disapprove.
“President Biden’s numbers are not where they need to be at this stage,” said Democratic pollster Jeff Horwitt of Hart Research, which conducted this poll with Republican pollster Bill McInturff and his team at Public Opinion Strategies.
The fact that Biden will announce by video instead of in a live speech packed with raucous supporters is reminiscent of his 2020 presidential campaign. Biden spent a lot of time in the basement of his Wilmington, Delaware, mansion, especially at the end of the campaign. The thinking was simple: Biden was leading in nearly every national poll, and, frankly, Biden’s habit of garbling words and misspeaking was just too dangerous. So he hunkered down.
At the end of September 2020, for instance, Fox News reported that “since his Aug. 11 selection of California Sen. Kamala Harris as his running mate, Biden has had 22 days where he either didn’t make public appearances, held only virtual fundraisers or ventured from his Delaware home solely for church.” He made just 12 visits outside Delaware during that time frame, while over the same period, Trump made 24 trips that took him to 17 different states, as well as a visit to New York to see his ailing brother in the hospital.

In anticipation of Biden’s re-election announcement, the Republican National Committee (RNC) is launching a website that will fact-check the president in real-time.
The RNC says it hopes to make “factcheckbiden.com” Biden’s “least favorite website.”
“Not only has Biden created crisis after crisis, he lies about the damage that he’s done to our country. Whether it’s claiming that the border is secure, that our economy is strong, or that the botched withdrawal from Afghanistan was a success, Biden and his administration refuse to acknowledge the truth,” RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said in a statement.
“The RNC will continue to hold Biden accountable for his lies, and on November 2024, the American people will too,” she said.
