Wednesday, November 9th, President-elect Donald Trump gave a speech in which he touted his massive stimulus plan, saying:
“We are going to fix our inner cities and rebuild our highways, bridges, tunnels, airports, schools, hospitals…We are going to rebuild our infrastructure, which will become, by the way, second to none. We will put millions of our people to work as we rebuild it.”
One of the best barometers to determine where the Republican Party is in terms of ideology is Rush Limbaugh, and talk radio in general. The rise of Trump revealed that many allegedly conservative media personalities were not actually conservative at all, rather, they were big government populists who simply wanted a strong man on their side.
This trend is continuing with Limbaugh praising Trump’s proposed trillion dollar stimulus package:
“You’re gonna have conservative arguments against it, claiming this is not how it works, this is still federal spending, this is still budget busting, it’s still massively expanding the government. However, there will be tangible results that will result in improved and modernized airports, which will make them more economically booming. They will be able to attract more traffic, more landings and takeoffs, which include fees…
If trump does this and if there are witness-able, demonstrable results of modernization at airports, your gonna be hard pressed to get people to find a problem with it.”
Rush goes on to pontificate about the battle between conservatism and Trump’s very non-conservative plan:
The next several years will define the conservative movement. With many revealing their true colors during the course of Trump’s rise to the presidency, there’s now a clearly drawn line between constitutional conservatives and populists masquerading as fellow travelers.
The conservative minority must craft persuasive arguments to combat the rise of populism. We have the correct message, it’s simply a matter of wielding it more effectively. We’ve been thrust into an ideological fight we didn’t predict, and we must land every blow with precision.
