Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) had some harsh words for real estate mogul Donald Trump’s race-baiting smears against a federal judge.
Last week, Trump took umbrage with Judge Gonzalo Curiel’s decision to release nearly 400 documents related to Trump University, so he responded by attacking Curiel’s heritage.
“I have a judge who is a hater of Donald Trump. A hater. He’s a hater,” Trump said. “His name is Gonzalo Curiel. And he is not doing the right thing … [He] happens to be, we believe, Mexican.”
Rubio appeared on local ABC affiliate WFTV and expressed his disdain for Trump’s comments.
“I don’t defend what he says, and all I can tell you is I ran for president and I warned you this is what was going to happen,” Rubio said. “I consistently said if he became the nominee, we’d face these sorts of difficult choices we now have.”
Rubio defended Curiel, saying that he “is an American” and that Trump’s comments are a bad look for the Republican Party and the country as a whole.
“There shouldn’t be any sort of ethnicity, religious or racial test for what kind of judges should hear what kind of cases,” Rubio said. “If you take that argument and expand it, you can make that argument about anybody in any circumstances. It’s wrong and I think he should stop.”
However, Rubio maintained that he would continue to support Trump as the nominee.
“I gave my word,” Rubio said.
As The Daily Wire reported last week, Rubio pivoted from calling Trump a “con man” and a “lunatic” in the primary to saying he would be “honored” to give a speech at Republican National Convention embracing Trump.
Now that Rubio has fully committed himself to Trump’s candidacy, he has to handle Trump’s authoritarianism and race-baiting and find a way to condemn them while simultaneously defending his endorsement of Trump. As RedState’s Leon Wolf writes, “Greetings, Republicans who have endorsed Trump. Welcome to your new life. From now on, whenever you want to appear on television to discuss something that is of interest to you or your constituents, you will instead get to spend the vast majority of the interview being confronted with the latest stupid/offensive thing Donald Trump has said, and asked if you still stand behind him in spite of them.”
Have fun, senator.
