On Thursday, comedian Ricky Gervais commented on the new left-wing trend of dunking right-wing politicians with milkshakes (which is assault), and he didn’t hold back.
“I voted remain. I would still like to stay in Europe,” wrote Gervais, a self-described left-wing liberal. “I will argue with people who disagree me, always respecting their right to do so.”
“What I won’t do is throw things at them,” he continued. “That would mean I had run out of good arguments. It would also mean I deserve a smack in the mouth.”
As reported by CNN International earlier this month, “Police ordered a McDonald’s in Scotland to stop selling milkshakes over fears people would dunk them over Brexit campaigner Nigel Farage, staff said, after a flurry of incidents left prominent far-right activists doused in the creamy liquid. Farage, the leader of the Brexit Party, was holding an event in Edinburgh on Friday ahead of next week’s European elections.”
Still, earlier in the week, Farage was dunked with a banana and salted caramel milkshake from a Five Guys restaurant by a left-wing protester after giving a short speech regarding coming European elections, The Daily Wire reported.
Gervais, the creator of the U.K. version of “The Office” and Netflix’s new hit “After Life,” has been a consistent voice defending free speech.
“I’m an old fashioned liberal lefty, champagne socialist type of guy,” the comedian posted in January. “A pro-equality, opportunity-for-all, welfare state snowflake. But, if I ever defend freedom of speech on here, I’m suddenly an alt right nazi. How did that happen?”
Last week, Gervais applauded Spiked columnist Andrew Doyle, the creator of “woke” liberal-mocking satirical Twitter account Titania McGrath, for an interview wherein Doyle expressed his support for free speech and discussed the glaring lack of comedians refusing to speak up.
“Brilliant interview. Clear, intelligent, sincere. Good job,” Gervais told Doyle.
Moreover, in 2016, when Gervais was hit with criticism over jokes he made about transgender celebrity Caitlyn Jenner at the Golden Globes, the actor refused to apologize for his comedy, instead mocking the Left. As noted by The Daily Wire, the creative talent launched a myriad of tweets at the perpetually-offended Left, quipping that he must be “TransportPhobic” since he “made a joke about Caitlyn Jenner killing someone in her car.”
