Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Wednesday formally suspended cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

He issued the law, which was passed last week by the Iranian parliament, stipulating that Iran’s Supreme National Security Council must approve any future inspections by the IAEA. Pezeshkian’s announcement was transmitted to the Atomic Energy Organization.

“It’s time to activate the snapback (sanctions),” Israel’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gideon Sa’ar, posted on X in response to the news. “I call on the E3 countries  — Germany, Britain and France  — to reimpose all sanctions against Iran. Iran has just issued a scandalous announcement to stop cooperation between itself and the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency). This is a complete renunciation of all its international nuclear obligations. After the action of Israel and the US — the international community must act now and decisively with all the tools at its disposal to stop the Iranian nuclear program.”

“One of #Iran’s regime’s remaining points of leverage is the opacity of its nuclear program following the U.S. and #Israel strikes,” Jason Brodsky of United Against Nuclear Iran noted. “So it will exploit the uncertainty over its stockpile and program as a Sword of Damocles over the IAEA and int’l community.”

After Iran’s Kayhan newspaper, which is closely aligned with Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, accused IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi of ties with the Mossad, which could mean his arrest and execution if he entered Iran, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio fired back on X, stating, “Calls in Iran for the arrest and execution of IAEA Director General Grossi are unacceptable and should be condemned. We support the IAEA’s critical verification and monitoring efforts in Iran and commend the Director General and the IAEA for their dedication and professionalism. We call on Iran to provide for the safety and security of IAEA personnel.”

France, Germany, and the United Kingdom’s foreign ministries condemned the threats against the Grossi, issuing a statement reiterating their “full support to the Agency and the DG in carrying out their mandate. We call on Iranian authorities to refrain from any steps to cease cooperation with the IAEA. We urge Iran to immediately resume full cooperation in line with its legally binding obligations, and to take all necessary steps to ensure the safety and security of IAEA personnel.”
