A new poll released by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) reveals that an increasing majority of Americans support the idea that there are only two genders.

The poll asked more than 5,400 Americans to give their opinions on the gender binary, relationships with “LGBTQ people,” and the role of public schools in teaching sex and gender identity. The poll focused on different ethnic and religious groups in the U.S., breaking down the results by generation.

PPRI found that 65% of Americans, up from 59% in 2021, say there are only two genders: male and female. These views are highly salient, as 50% of Americans “feel strongly” that there are two genders, while 15% believe there are two genders but do not feel strongly about it. Only 14% of Americans believe strongly that there are more than two genders.

The poll revealed sharp partisan differences. 90% of Republicans support the gender binary, with 80% feeling strongly about it. 44% of Democrats agree, up from 38% in 2021. 66% of independents also believe in two genders, up from 60%.

Support for the traditional view on gender increased or remained constant in every polled demographic. The most dramatic increases were in “Other Protestants of Color” (increase from 52% to 73%), Hispanic Catholics (48% to 66%), and “Other non-Christian religion” (42% to 55%). White evangelicals had the highest support (92%), while Jewish Americans had the lowest (44%), even lower than the unaffiliated (46%).

Along racial lines, black Americans are the most likely to support the gender binary (70%), with white and Hispanic Americans closely following (66%). Multiracial Americans had lower support (56%), and Asian Americans were the least likely to support the binary (53%).

Every generation also saw an increase in support for the binary, with a complete flip among Generation Z — from 43% support to 57% in just two years. Millennials also saw a nine-point increase to 60%, presumably a manifestation of the rightward shift among young voters reported recently by The New York Times.

Further, 62% of Americans believe “people spend too much time talking about their gender and pronouns.” Even a majority of those who are or have a close relationship with someone who is lesbian, gay, or bisexual agree with this statement.

The poll also included questions about when teaching about same-sex relationships and transgenderism in public schools is appropriate. 34% of Americans — 55% of Republicans, 32% of independents, and 18% of Democrats — opposed teaching same-sex relationships in all stages of school.

7% believe teaching transgenderism is appropriate in early elementary school, 11% in late elementary school, 26% in middle school, and 18% in high school. The largest category, however, opposes teaching transgenderism in K-12 schools at all stages, at 36%.

Most Americans believe that public schools interfere too much with parental rights, at 53%. 79% of Republicans, 50% of independents, and 31% of Democrats agreed.
