Three people are dead and five other victims have been hospitalized, some with life-threatening injuries, after a shooting that took place in two locations around Michigan State University (MSU) on Monday evening, according to authorities.

A single suspect was at large as of 11 p.m. ET, and police advised people in and around the East Lansing, Michigan, campus, to shelter in place as a manhunt continues.

During an 11 p.m. news conference, MSU Interim Police Chief Chris Rozman described the suspect as being a short black male wearing red shoes, a jean jacket, and a baseball cap.

MSU police released photos on Twitter, showing the suspect in a stairwell.

Rozman said police first received calls about a shooting at Berkey Hall at around 8:18 p.m., and then a short time later there were reports of a shooting at the MSU student union building.

The suspect was last seen leaving the north side of the MSU student union building on foot, Rozman said.

Rozman said there was an “overwhelming” law enforcement response to the shooting.

MSU police announced on Twitter just before midnight that three people died, in addition to the five people Rozman said were hospitalized during the 11 p.m. news conference.

Rozman said another media briefing would take place at midnight.

MSU police said all campus activities are canceled for 48 hours, including athletics, classes, and all campus-related activities.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer said she has been briefed on the situation. “Let’s wrap our arms around the Spartan community tonight. We will keep everyone updated as we learn more,” Whitmer tweeted.
