Pennsylvania Lt. Governor and Democratic Senate nominee John Fetterman reportedly had a tattoo on his forearm reading “I WILL MAKE YOU HURT” before concealing it with a filled-in rectangle.

According to Breitbart, the candidate’s tattoo was covered sometime before his first Senate bid in 2015, as shown in footage posted by CNN. However, a feature published by Rolling Stone in 2009 confirmed the wording of the tattoo.

Fetterman — who served as mayor of Braddock, Pennsylvania, from 2006 to 2019 — also has tattoos listing every murder that occurred in the blighted steel town during his tenure. “That’s what it does to me,” he told Rolling Stone about the violence that his now-covered tattoo was intended to lament. “It’s very personal.”

As noted by Breitbart, the phrase “I will make you hurt” is a lyric in the 1994 song “Hurt” by Nine Inch Nails, which alludes to intravenous drugs and suicide.

Earlier this month, Fox News host Tucker Carlson accused Fetterman of using his tattoos as “costumes,” citing the candidate’s repeated nods to drug decriminalization and monitored injection sites. In an opinion piece for NBC News, however, Fetterman responded that his “decision to mark these deaths with tattoos was inspired in part by their permanence — the fact that these people, their stories and my town will be with me forever.”

A graduate of Albright College and Harvard University, Fetterman began his career working for government public service agency AmeriCorps, which asked him to start youth art projects in Braddock. The controversial politician — who wears hoodies and basketball shorts in public and towers at six feet, eight inches — couples his unorthodox appearance with equally unorthodox policies.

In a recent poll from CBS News and YouGov, Fetterman was backed by 52% of respondents, while Dr. Mehmet Oz, his Republican opponent, was supported by 47%. Voters also indicated a higher level of favorability for the former candidate — 56% of Fetterman supporters said they are backing him “mainly because” they like him. In comparison, only 15% of Oz voters said the same.

Democratic operatives hope Fetterman will contribute to a majority in the evenly divided Senate. However, Fetterman suffered a stroke days before his primary election and has since stumbled during speeches at multiple campaign events. Roughly 41% of voters believe Fetterman is not in “good enough health” to serve in office.

Beyond his support for drug decriminalization, Fetterman responded affirmatively last year when asked if he agreed that LGBTQ education should be “mandatory” in schools nationwide. Fetterman was the “first and only elected official” in Pennsylvania to “solemnize same-sex weddings” as early as 2013, although the practice was still illegal, according to his campaign website.

Oz, a celebrity cardiologist, recently said that he believes “same-sex couples should have the same freedom to get married as straight couples.” He joined other Republicans in supporting the Respect for Marriage Act, which would enshrine same-sex marriage into federal law, although other Republican lawmakers have opposed the legislation over concern about religious liberty and conscience protection. Meanwhile, a majority of Republican voters had, for the first time, indicated that they support same-sex marriage early in 2021, according to a poll from the Public Religion Research Institute.
