Speaking with graduating Christian students at Liberty University in Virginia, Vice President Mike Pence warned that religious freedom is “under assault” across the world and advised his young audience to prepare for “persecution.”
“The truth is, we live in a time when the freedom of religion is under assault,” Pence told the graduating class, according to LifeSiteNews.
The vice president went on to lament that the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom confirmed that Christians comprise today the world’s most persecuted minority.
“In fact, the United Kingdom released a report just last week that said persecution of Christians worldwide is ‘near genocide levels,'” Pence said.
Mike Pence recalled the horrific violence that Christians, Jews, and Muslims alike have suffered in recent months, from the synagogues in Pennsylvania and California to the Catholics in Sri Lanka. “In the last few months, we’ve seen unspeakable attacks on people of faith — on Jewish synagogues in Pennsylvania and California, on mosques in New Zealand, Christian churches in Sri Lanka, and on three historically black churches in Louisiana,” he said. “No one should ever fear for their safety in a place of worship, and these attacks on people of faith must stop.”
The vice president also issued some veiled criticism of the Obama administration for its persecution of people of faith in the United States by forcing religious organizations like Little Sisters of the Poor to provide contraception in their employee health plans. He also criticized the Hollywood elites for enacting a boycott against the state of Georgia merely for protecting unborn children from abortion.
“You know, it wasn’t all that long ago that the last administration brought the full weight of the federal government against the Little Sisters of the Poor merely because that group of nuns refused to provide a health plan that violated their deeply held religious beliefs,” said Pence. “And when the state of Georgia recently was debating legal protections for the unborn, a bevy of Hollywood liberals said they would boycott the entire state.”
Vice President Pence and his family are no strangers to the leftist elite’s attacks on religious liberty. Earlier this year, his wife fell subject to a storm of rage merely for teaching at a school that enforced biblical sexual principles on its faculty and student body.
“And when my wife Karen returned to teach art at an elementary Christian school earlier this year, we faced harsh attacks by the media and the secular Left,” Pence told the college graduates. “And a major newspaper reporter actually started a new hashtag, called ‘Expose Christian Schools,’ inviting students to share their ‘horror stories’ of Christian education.”
“The freedom of religion is enshrined in our First Amendment and in the hearts of every American. And these attacks on Christian education are un-American,” he emphatically stated.
President Trump has routinely spoken out in favor of religious freedom and has taken action to strengthen conscience rights. Most recently, the Trump administration expanded conscience protections for health care workers, protecting doctors from the government forcing them to perform services against their religious beliefs, such as abortions.
