Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) faced backlash online following the news of former President Donald Trump’s indictment after she claimed that Trump would have the opportunity to prove his innocence at trial.

The indictment stems from a five-year investigation surrounding an alleged $130,000 hush money payment to porn actress Stormy Daniels and whether the money was improperly recorded in business records and if that improper recording was used to conceal or commit a second crime.

“The Grand Jury has acted upon the facts and the law,” the former House speaker tweeted. “No one is above the law, and everyone has the right to a trial to prove innocence. Hopefully, the former President will peacefully respect the system, which grants him that right.”

Pelosi’s remarks generated thousands of responses pointing out how her statement about on the U.S. justice system was false.

Daily Wire Editor Emeritus Ben Shapiro tweeted, “Uh it’s ‘innocent until proven guilty’ not opportunity to ‘prove innocence’.”

“In the United States we don’t ‘prove innocence,'” actor Dean Cain said. “We are presumed innocent until proven guilty. How do you not know this?”

Federalist senior editor David Harsanyi tweeted, “Why do we think she said this ‘mistakenly?’ This is exactly how these people were talking about the Kavanaugh smears, as well.”

“Are you truly this ignorant? This imbecilic? This misguided? This fascistic?” professor Gad Saad tweeted. “A ‘trial to prove innocence’? Are you familiar with the concept of presumption of innocence as the DEFAULT a priori position? You are a disgrace.”

Former Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY) tweeted, “Nancy Pelosi is dead wrong here. Does she really have no clue that the burden is not on a defendant to prove their innocence at trial?”

Political commentator Stephen L. Miller added, “Nancy Pelosi has the right to a trial to prove her innocence on obvious insider trading.”
