TOPSHOT - Migrants run into the street to evade law enforcement after illegally crossing into the US via a hole in a fence in El Paso, Texas, on December 22, 2022. - The US Supreme Court halted December 19, 2022 the imminent scrapping of a key policy used since Donald Trump's administration to block migrants at the southwest border, amid worries over a surge in undocumented immigrants. An order signed by Chief Justice John Roberts placed an emergency stay on the removal planned for December 21, 2022 of Title 42, which allowed the government to use Covid-19 safety protocols to summarily block the entry of millions of migrants. Nearly 100,000 illegal migrants have reportedly evaded law enforcement at the southern border since the beginning of October.

More than 96,000 “known gotaways,” migrants who were detected but not caught, have crossed the southern border since October 1, when the current fiscal year started, sources from Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said according to Fox News.

The numbers mean more than 800 people have snuck over the border every day and are presumably living in the U.S. undetected.

The number of migrants actually encountered by border authorities is much higher — more than 785,000 migrants have been encountered since October 1, a record for the final months of a year.

In December, border authorities reportedly encountered more than 302,000 migrants at the border, the highest monthly total ever, CBP sources told Fox News.

“We don’t know where these people are coming from, where they’re going, what they’re carrying or if they’re terrorists,” Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) posted on X on Wednesday, reacting to the new gotaway numbers.

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) also commented, posting, “96,000 gotaways over the last four months and counting. Meanwhile, the Biden Admin continues to mass release apprehended illegals everyday. This is on Biden and Mayorkas, and they need to close the border and enforce our laws now.”

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is facing a push for his impeachment over the border crisis from House Republicans, who accuse him of disastrous border policies and of lying to lawmakers when he said authorities had “operational control” of the border.

The House Homeland Security Committee is set to vote on impeachment articles against Mayorkas on Tuesday. The impeachment push will likely not survive the Democrat-led Senate, where two-thirds of senators would have to vote for Mayorkas’ removal.

“Our thorough and fair investigation exposed Secretary Mayorkas’ abuse of power and refusal to comply with the law,” committee Chairman Mark Green (R-TN) said.

Earlier this month, a new poll showed immigration outpacing inflation as the top concern among voters.

About 35% of voters said immigration was their top concern, while about 32% said inflation was their main concern, according to a Harvard CAPS-Harris poll released Monday.

Only 35% of people said they approve of how President Biden has handled immigration, according to the poll.

Meanwhile, Texas has sent more than 90,000 migrants to cities run by Democrats in order to ease the strain on overrun border communities.

Governor Greg Abbott (R) has sent migrants to New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Denver, and Washington, D.C., causing those cities to spend millions of dollars in resources caring for the newcomers.
