This week, dozens of migrants were found dead in a tractor trailer under the scorching Texas sun in what law enforcement called the deadliest human smuggling incident in the nation&#8217;s history.
By Wednesday, 53 migrants, most from Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras, had died after being trapped for hours in the sweltering semi-truck, which was abandoned in a desolate area on the outskirts of San Antonio, where temperatures rose into the 100s. In a particularly gruesome detail, some of those found in the truck appeared to have roasted to death dusted with steak seasoning, a possible attempt to disguise the smell of people as the smugglers crossed the border.
At least 5 of the dead were children.
President Biden called the incident &#8220;horrifying and heartbreaking&#8221; and said his administration &#8220;will continue to do everything possible to stop criminal smugglers from exploiting migrants.&#8221;
However, Biden&#8217;s policies at the border may provide a fertile environment for this kind of horrific tragedy to strike again.
&#8220;This isn’t just due to a passive stance on human smuggling and trafficking, but policy decisions they started making right out the gate,&#8221; said RJ Hauman, director of government relations and communications at the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR).
Biden scrapped the Trump administration&#8217;s &#8220;Remain in Mexico&#8221; policy, which required asylum seekers to return to Mexico to await their court dates. The Biden administration has also attempted to end Title 42, the health policy that has allowed border officials to rapidly expel nearly two million illegal immigrants over COVID-19 concerns. That attempt was blocked in federal court.
As he <a href="https://www.npr.org/2020/08/05/899266045/biden-would-end-border-wall-construction-but-wont-tear-down-trump-s-additions">promised</a> during his campaign, Biden also <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2021/04/30/biden-terminates-border-wall-construction-485123">halted</a> construction on Trump&#8217;s border wall and scaled back deportations. The administration rarely deports any illegal immigrants from the interior of the country.
Experts say these policies encourage migrants to try their luck entering illegally and offer smugglers with dangerous practices an opportunity to take advantage.
&#8220;We say don’t come because we will not let you in, but our policies encourage the opposite,&#8221; Hauman told The Daily Wire. &#8220;Migrants around the world have taken note of this, and they’re using dangerous cartels, smugglers, and traffickers, to make the journey in. And the end result can be tragic situations.&#8221;
Meanwhile, illegal border crossings are soaring. In May, border authorities encountered more than 239,000 migrants at the southwest border, well above the less than 181,000 they encountered last May, according to Customs and Border Protection. This month, authorities expect to meet or exceed last June&#8217;s two-decade high of more than 189,000 migrant encounters.
Border Patrol has conducted more than 10,500 migrant rescue missions so far this fiscal year, on track to beat last year&#8217;s record more than 12,800 rescue missions. Earlier this month, CBP announced a new heat stress effort and said it will provide 500 agents with &#8220;heat stress kits&#8221; and heat stress training.
The Biden administration&#8217;s lenient policies at the southern border appear to have exacerbated a situation that began before Biden took office. Decades of a porous U.S.-Mexico border, overwhelmed border authorities, and previous administrations that, according to critics, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/obama-aides-were-warned-of-brewing-border-crisis/2014/07/19/8b5d2282-0d1b-11e4-b8e5-d0de80767fc2_story.html">encouraged</a> weak border security contributed to the dangerous situation we see today.
A nearly identical incident involving a truck happened in 2017, when 10 migrants <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2017/07/24/us/san-antonio-trailer-migrants/index.html">died</a> after being trapped in a tractor-trailer found parked at a Walmart in San Antonio.
Back in 2003, 19 migrants including small children and very elderly people were <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/dozens-migrants-found-dead-san-antonio-texas-gov-abbott-says-rcna35627">found</a> dead in the back of a semi truck, crammed in with about 100 other people in temperatures above 100 degrees. The driver of the truck had been paid $7,500 to drive the migrants through a Border Patrol checkpoint.
Migrants who cross the border illegally face a gauntlet of other perils besides dangerously high heat.
Just last year in March, an SUV carrying 25 people, most of whom were Mexican, <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/hospital-suv-carrying-27-crashes-semitruck-killing-15-76205214">crashed</a> into a semitruck in California, killing 13 people.
Jarring <a href="https://www.latimes.com/world/la-fg-father-daughter-drowning-mexican-border-20190626-story.html">photos</a> of dead migrant children who drowned while trying to cross the Rio Grande have seared themselves into the American psyche.
&#8220;This is another horrific episode in the long-running disaster brought on by the Biden administration’s refusal to enforce immigration laws,&#8221; said Jessica Vaughan, director of policy studies at the Center for Immigration Studies.
&#8220;Instead of arresting and removing illegal border crossers as the law requires, Biden continues to release most of them into the country, free to settle where they want,&#8221; Vaughan told The Daily Wire. &#8220;This creates an irresistible enticement to hire a smuggler to cross illegally, or to send their children to cross illegally. The border is not closed, nor secure as he claims; the migrants are not fools, they know that if they can get across, chances are they will be allowed to stay here indefinitely.&#8221;
Vaughan noted that this week&#8217;s truck disaster was the result of a &#8220;relatively sophisticated&#8221; smuggling operation and said that Biden appears to be &#8220;indifferent to the suffering&#8221; and &#8220;more interested in pleasing the special interests who demand an open border for the sake of cheap labor and political advantage.&#8221;

Jeffrey Epstein&#8217;s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/maxwells-epstein-friendship-may-have-been-a-mistake-but-it-was-not-a-crime-her-defense-says-in-closing-arguments">former girlfriend</a> and convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/maxwell-caused-deep-and-lasting-harm-to-young-girls-prosecution-says-in-closing-arguments">Maxwell</a> was sentenced to prison on Tuesday.
U.S. District Judge Alison Nathan sentenced Maxwell to 20 years in prison and imposed a $750,000 fine.
&#8220;A sentence of 240 months is sufficient and no graver than necessary,” the judge stated, saying that Maxwell&#8217;s criminal activity was &#8220;extensive.&#8221;
Prosecutors had hoped for a sentence of at least 30 years, while Maxwell&#8217;s defense had hoped for just four or five years in prison for their client. If her sentence is shortened for good behavior, Maxwell could be released from prison in her late 70s.
Maxwell was found guilty by a jury in December on five of six <a href="https://casetext.com/case/united-states-v-maxwell-257">counts</a>, including sex trafficking of an individual under 18 and transportation of an individual under 17 with intent to engage in “illegal sexual activity,” along with three conspiracy charges. She pled not guilty to all counts.
The former international socialite was a close confidant of Epstein for decades and managed his Florida estate. The two were frequently seen cavorting with billionaires, presidents, and members of the British royal family before they were disgraced. Maxwell remained the well-connected investment manager’s companion for decades even after their nebulous romantic relationship appeared to fizzle in the late 1990s.
Epstein was found dead at 66 in his Manhattan jail cell in August 2019 before the well-connected and wealthy financier could go on trial for his alleged decades of grooming and sexual abuse, including rape, of young girls in the 1990s and early 2000s.
The lurid details of his alleged sex ring include accusations that he procured underage girls for prominent men on his private island in the Virgin Islands, Little St. James.
Maxwell was arrested on July 2, 2020, when federal investigators discovered her hiding out in a New Hampshire mansion after virtually disappearing following Epstein’s death. She was held in a Brooklyn jail without bail because the judge deemed her a flight risk.
Between 1994 and 1997, Maxwell, “assisted, facilitated, and contributed” to Epstein’s abuse of minor girls even though she and Epstein both knew their victims, one of whom was just 14, were underage, according to the indictment against her.
Her trial in Manhattan federal court began in November.
The prosecution in Maxwell&#8217;s trial painted a picture of a pair of fully-grown adults, Maxwell and Epstein, who were “partners in crime” and had a “playbook” for targeting minors and sexually abusing them.
“Ghislaine Maxwell was dangerous. She was a grown woman who preyed on vulnerable kids,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Alison Moe said in closing arguments.
The defense attempted to cast doubt on the credibility of Maxwell’s accusers, saying the women have “contaminated” memories. The defense also tried to assign selfish motives to nearly all the government’s witnesses, saying the women are motivated by money in going after Maxwell decades after the alleged abuse occurred.
Over the course of the trial, the jury heard from four of Maxwell’s accusers, several former Epstein employees, a psychologist specializing in sexual abuse, and a memory expert that Maxwell’s defense called, among others.
One of Maxwell’s accusers, a woman testifying under the pseudonym “Jane,” testified that Epstein and Maxwell abused her together when she was just 14 years old. Maxwell took her on shopping trips, asked her about her life, and discussed sexual topics with her, “Jane” said.
Three other women who say they were groomed or abused by Maxwell also testified. One woman, Annie Farmer, who testified under her full name, said Maxwell massaged her naked breasts when she was 16.
Dozens of other women have also accused Epstein of grooming and sexual abusing them when they were minors.
Another prominent accuser, Virginia Giuffre, accused Maxwell of grooming her for Epstein’s abuse when she was a 16-year-old spa attendant at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach (Trump reportedly later <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/510604-book-claims-trump-barred-epstein-from-mar-a-lago-after-financier-hit">banned</a> Epstein from Mar-a-Lago in 2007 for harassing another member’s teenage daughter). Giuffre said the sexual abuse she suffered included lessons on Epstein’s oral sex preferences. Maxwell accused her of “obvious lies,” and Giuffre sued Maxwell for defamation.
During a deposition in that case, Maxwell claimed she had never given Epstein or anyone else a massage, a claim prosecutors said was a lie. Prosecutors also said she lied about whether she knew Epstein had sex toys and whether she knew that he engaged in sexual activity with anyone other than herself and two other women.
The sex trafficking trial that ended in December prompted speculation that incriminating information could potentially come to light about some of the high-profile names connected to Epstein, such as Microsoft founder Bill Gates, former presidents Donald Trump and Bill Clinton, Bobby Kennedy Jr., and former Sen. George Mitchell. However, the trial revealed little new information about Epstein’s circle of friends.
Initially, Maxwell vehemently maintained her innocence, even blurting out at a pre-trial conference, “I have not committed any crime.”
On Tuesday, Maxwell struck a more subdued tone when she addressed the court before her sentencing.
&#8220;The terrible impact on the lives of so many women is difficult to hear and even more difficult to absorb, both in its scale and in its extent,&#8221; Maxwell said.
However, she placed the blame squarely on Epstein, implying that she too was manipulated by him.
“I believe that Jeffrey Epstein was a manipulative, cunning and controlling man who lived a profoundly compartmentalized life and fooled all of those in his orbit,” Maxwell said.

Brown University offered a new class to minority students only, a decision that prompted a backlash.
In May, the Ivy League school in Providence, Rhode Island, began offering a teacher training class on mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), but students were only permitted to enroll if they identified as black, indigenous, or Latino.
An anonymous Brown student attempted to enroll in the class but was denied because they do not identify as BIPOC. The student pushed back and raised the alarm, filing a complaint with the Foundation Against Intolerance &amp; Racism (FAIR).
&#8220;Brown is offering a RACE-BASED teacher training program that is ONLY open to certain demographics (black, latino, indigenous),&#8221; the student wrote in their May 13 <a href="https://www.fairtransparency.org/incident-report?iid=627e738e1098100009500ec8">complaint</a>.
&#8220;This is a return to educational segregation based on skin color,&#8221; the student wrote.
The student said that the teachers of this particular class would also be BIPOC.
The certificate program also offers financial aid to the BIPOC students but does not offer such assistance to white and Asian students who may not be able to afford the program either, the student claimed.
&#8220;This results in certain demographics being favored over others and is discriminatory,&#8221; the student wrote.
&#8220;As a student of the program, I find myself being unable to continue my training with this institution as I refuse to support educational segregation based solely on skin color as it violates my core principles, values, and the Buddhist teachings that which this program is based on,&#8221; the student wrote.
Earlier this month, FAIR sent a <a href="https://www.fairforall.org/content/pdfs/general/Letter-to-Brown-University-BIPOC-only-Mindfulness-Based-Stress-Reduction-Class.pdf?_t=1656000139">letter</a> to Brown urging the university to open the class to all students.
&#8220;We urge the university to open the program to any deserving student without regard to their immutable traits,&#8221; FAIR attorney Leigh Ann O’Neill wrote. &#8220;We also believe that such a gesture would demonstrate Brown’s commitment to non-discrimination and equal access.&#8221;
Brown <a href="https://www.fairforall.org/content/pdfs/general/Brown-University-Response-to-FAIR.png?_t=1656000522">responded</a> on June 21, acknowledging FAIR&#8217;s letter and saying the university intends to respond as soon as possible.
Since the complaint, Brown has scrapped the decision only to allow students of color to take the class. The school will permit any student to enroll in the course, which picks up again in August.

“Upon further review of our early promotional materials for the program, we realigned them to reflect the program’s inclusive nature, while still meeting the goal of addressing the needs, life experiences, and priorities of marginalized communities,” Dr. Eric Loucks, director of Brown University’s Mindfulness Center where the class is held, told the New York Post.
Loucks initially defended the decision to allow only BIPOC people to enroll in the class.
“The intent is to reach future teachers who have a special interest in or history of personal engagement with the experiences of Black, Indigenous, and/or Latino/Latina/Latinx peoples and others who have been underrepresented in the mindfulness field,” Loucks <a href="https://nypost.com/2022/06/23/brown-university-mindfulness-course-offered-only-to-minority-students/">said</a>.
Brown is not the only Ivy League school to offer a minorities-only class in recent years.
Last year, Cornell University <a href="https://nypost.com/2021/05/05/cornell-defends-bipoc-only-rock-climbing-class-after-online-uproar/">offered</a> a rock-climbing class for “people who identify as Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, or other people of color.” The course prompted backlash online, with critics accusing the school of racism.

The Daily Wire&#8217;s Ben Shapiro reacted to the Supreme Court&#8217;s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/abortion">abortion</a> decision on his podcast Friday, calling it a &#8220;victory for human life&#8221; and warning that the Left will erupt over the decision.
The Supreme Court released a 6-3 decision Friday morning in Dobbs v. Jackson Women&#8217;s Health Organization, which has the effect of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/planned-parenthood-reacts-to-scotus-abortion-ruling">overturning</a> Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 abortion case that legalized abortion nationwide.
&#8220;This means states are now free to regulate abortion. They are now free to protect unborn human life. That is what this decision means,&#8221; Shapiro said. &#8220;It means that hundreds of thousands of children who would have been killed in the womb will now live. This is a victory for human life. This is a victory for all human beings who are made in the image of God.&#8221;
Shapiro also warned listeners to prepare for a &#8220;weekend of rage&#8221; since &#8220;presumably the Left is now going to lose its ever-loving mind,&#8221; noting the recent violent <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/fbi-investigating-attacks-on-pro-life-centers-organizations">attacks</a> on pro-life clinics and churches.
&#8220;There&#8217;s going to be a hue and cry across the land where we are told that women everywhere are going to be suffering from back-alley abortions and all the rest,&#8221; Shapiro said.
&#8220;Part of the court&#8217;s job is to say, &#8216;this is not in our purview cause it ain&#8217;t in the Constitution,’” he said. &#8220;But according to the Left, everything is in the court&#8217;s purview so long as the Left has its own policy prerogatives greenlit by the Supreme Court.&#8221;
Shapiro added that, &#8220;from a moral point of view, I would love to see the pro-life movement win across the board.&#8221;
&#8220;But on a constitutional level, the resolution of this constitutional issue, by getting rid of Roe v. Wade and delegating it back to the states, which is where it originally was placed, that is the proper constitutional response to this, barring the reinterpretation of the 14th Amendment to protect unborn human life, which for this court would have been a stretch,&#8221; he continued.
In a lengthy 147-page decision, five justices agreed to overturn Roe, with Justice Samuel Alito writing the majority opinion. Chief Justice John Roberts agreed to uphold the Mississippi abortion ban, but he did not believe the court should overturn Roe. The court&#8217;s three liberal justices, Elena Kagan, Stephen Breyer, and Sonya Sotomayor dissented.
The decision also overturned another landmark abortion case, Planned Parenthood v. Casey, which in 1992 doubled down on the right to abortion access established by Roe.
Justices Clarence Thomas and Brett Kavanaugh penned their own concurring opinions. Thomas&#8217; opinion was &#8220;spectacular&#8221; and &#8220;more correct than the actual majority opinion,&#8221; Shapiro said.
Thomas <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/clarence-thomas-creates-shockwaves-for-stating-next-error-that-supreme-court-should-correct">agreed</a> with the majority in his concurring opinion that there is no constitutional right to abortion. He also wrote that “in future cases, we should reconsider all of this Court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell.” The cases mentioned by Thomas deal with contraception, homosexual sex, and gay marriage, respectively.
&#8220;The majority does not have the actual stones to rule like Justice Thomas, which is sad,&#8221; Shapiro said.
Meanwhile, Roberts also filed his own concurring opinion, but did not vote in favor of the majority opinion on Roe. Roberts was &#8220;precisely as cowardly as you would expect him to be&#8221; in his concurring opinion, Shapiro said.
Shapiro dubbed the court&#8217;s decision &#8220;the best that the pro-life movement could have hoped for,&#8221; and said that now, the &#8220;real battle on the ground&#8221; begins, namely figuring out what kinds of laws can be passed in various states to protect unborn human life.

On its website, Planned Parenthood&#8217;s activism arm solicited &#8220;urgent&#8221; donations in the wake of Roe v. Wade&#8216;s demise.
&#8220;Help protect access to safe, legal abortion and reproductive rights with an urgent gift to Planned Parenthood Action Fund now,&#8221; the abortion advocacy group <a href="https://www.weareplannedparenthoodaction.org/3xjKEbdxI0akYWCYCIiSoA2">said</a>.
The Supreme Court&#8217;s decision was the result of a Mississippi case called Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which dealt with Mississippi&#8217;s 15-week abortion ban.
The decision also overturned another landmark abortion case involving Planned Parenthood itself, Planned Parenthood v. Casey, which in 1992 doubled down on the right to abortion access established by Roe v. Wade.
The court&#8217;s decision Friday tosses the issue of legal abortion access back to the states, nearly half of which are expected to ban or tightly restrict abortion.
Clinics in some states have already suspended abortion services.
Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin suspended abortion services at its three clinics in the state that offer abortions until a court provides more clarification on whether the state&#8217;s abortion ban is enforceable.

South Dakota&#8217;s sole abortion clinic, a Planned Parenthood location in Sioux Falls, announced last week that it would halt abortions.

The Biden administration on Thursday officially proposed extending Title IX&#8217;s protections to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/transgender">transgender</a> students.
The proposed change would &#8220;protect LGBTQI+ students from discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and sex characteristics,&#8221; the Department of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/education">Education</a> <a href="https://www.ed.gov/news/press-releases/us-department-education-releases-proposed-changes-title-ix-regulations-invites-public-comment">said</a> in a statement.
The department proposed the Title IX change on the 50th anniversary of the civil rights law, which bars schools that receive federal funding from discriminating on the basis of sex. When Title IX was passed half a century ago, it was meant to protect the rights of women and girls in educational settings. Since then, it has been interpreted to apply to other protected classes, including LGBTQ people.
&#8220;Over the last 50 years, Title IX has paved the way for millions of girls and women to access equal opportunity in our nation&#8217;s schools and has been instrumental in combating sexual assault and sexual violence in educational settings,&#8221; said Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said in a statement.
&#8220;As we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of this landmark law, our proposed changes will allow us to continue that progress and ensure all our nation&#8217;s students – no matter where they live, who they are, or whom they love – can learn, grow, and thrive in school,&#8221; Cardona said.
Along with the changes on transgender students, the proposed rules would also overhaul the process by which schools handle sexual assault and sexual harassment allegations. The overhaul would nix changes made by the Trump administration that were intended to make the process more fair for accused students. While campaigning for president, President Joe Biden said the Trump administration&#8217;s changes &#8220;shame and silence survivors&#8221; and vowed to scrap them.
The new rules will &#8220;restore vital protections for students in our nation’s schools which were eroded by controversial regulations implemented during the previous Administration,&#8221; the education department said Thursday in a <a href="https://www2.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ocr/docs/t9nprm-factsheet.pdf">fact sheet</a> accompanying the proposed rule.
&#8220;Those regulations weakened protections for survivors of sexual assault and diminished the promise of an education free from discrimination,&#8221; the department said.
The new rules would rollback constitutional protections for students accused of heinous crimes, including the right to a live hearing, to cross-examine their accuser and the witnesses against them, and allowing a &#8220;single investigator&#8221; model that allows a single person to act as investigator, judge, jury, and executioner. This model would also prevent accused students from learning the evidence against them, such as what the accuser and witnesses are specifically accusing them of, and allow schools to keep individual testimonies hidden, making it more difficult for wrongly accused students to file a lawsuit to protect their civil rights.
Courts have consistently upheld civil rights for accused students in recent years, and legal challenges to the Trump administration&#8217;s regulations all failed.
In 2016, the Obama administration <a href="https://www.politico.com/story/2016/05/obama-administration-title-ix-transgender-student-rights-223149">issued</a> guidance saying Title IX protections also apply to a transgender student&#8217;s bathroom preference. The next year, however, the Trump administration <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2017/02/22/516664633/trump-administration-rescinds-obama-rule-on-transgender-students-bathroom-use">reversed</a> that guidance, saying the issue should not have been dealt with at the federal level and that there &#8220;must be due regard for the primary role of states and local school districts in establishing educational policy.&#8221;
Over the last year, parents have raised the alarm about biological males in girls bathrooms at school. In some cases, even elementary schools have <a href="https://abcnews4.com/news/nation-world/parents-push-back-against-elementary-schools-trans-bathroom-policy-olentangy-school-district-gender-inclusive-restroom-title-ix-lgbtq-transgender-students-single-sex-spaces">adopted</a> policies allowing transgender-identifying boys to use the girls bathrooms, prompting parents to complain at school board meetings.
The Biden administration did not address what the new rules would mean for transgender students competing on the college sports team of their preferred gender, an issue that has <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/lia-thomas-teammate-competitor-blast-title-as-illegitimate-in-wake-of-fina-transgender-restrictions">sparked</a> national debate in recent months.
The proposed rule is slated to be published in the Federal Register and will be open for public comment for 60 days afterwards. If approved, the policy would not take effect until next year at the earliest.

A former teammate of Lia Thomas, along with a rival team member who once tied with Thomas, blasted the transgender college swimmer&#8217;s championship title as illegitimate after swimming’s international governing body, the International Swimming Federation (FINA), issued stringent new restrictions on transgender swimmers.
On Monday, FINA <a href="https://resources.fina.org/fina/document/2022/06/19/525de003-51f4-47d3-8d5a-716dac5f77c7/FINA-INCLUSION-POLICY-AND-APPENDICES-FINAL-.pdf">released</a> a new &#8220;gender inclusion policy&#8221; that allows only transgender swimmers who transitioned from male to female before age 12 to compete in women&#8217;s events.
&#8220;I&#8217;m very hopeful about it,&#8221; Thomas&#8217; teammate, who was granted anonymity out of fear of backlash, said of the new restrictions.
&#8220;I am incredibly happy that Lia Thomas will never be an Olympic gold medalist. I think that&#8217;s great. But this doesn&#8217;t actually fix the NCAA [National Collegiate Athletic Association],&#8221; she told The Daily Wire.
Thomas, 22, competed on the men&#8217;s team at the University of Pennsylvania before coming out as transgender in 2019 and starting testosterone blockers and estrogen. Last year, Thomas competed on the women&#8217;s team, sparking a national debate. In March, Thomas won the NCAA Division I national championship after winning the women&#8217;s 500-yard freestyle event.
The NCAA&#8217;s current <a href="https://ncaaorg.s3.amazonaws.com/inclusion/lgbtq/INC_TransgenderHandbook.pdf">policy</a> allows biological males to compete on women&#8217;s teams after completing just one year of testosterone suppression treatment.
Thomas&#8217; teammate said she &#8220;would love&#8221; for the NCAA to rescind Thomas&#8217; championship title, although she&#8217;s doubtful that will happen. Even if the NCAA follows FINA&#8217;s lead and restricts transgender athletes on women&#8217;s teams, Thomas will likely be &#8220;grandfathered in,&#8221; the teammate said, adding that she finds that &#8220;ridiculous.&#8221;
Riley Gaines, a University of Kentucky swimmer, tied with Thomas for fifth place in the 200-yard freestyle final at the NCAA championship in March. She left the competition that day <a href="https://nypost.com/2022/04/04/swimmer-who-tied-lia-thomas-taken-aback-in-trophy-handling/">with a sixth-place trophy</a> after the NCAA decided to give Thomas the fifth-place trophy.
&#8220;I believe Lia is not the fastest female in the 500-yard freestyle, therefore I don&#8217;t think she should be awarded as a female national champion,&#8221; Gaines told The Daily Wire.
Gaines said the NCAA &#8220;needs to take accountability&#8221; and follow FINA&#8217;s lead on restricting transgender athletes on women&#8217;s teams, which she called &#8220;a bold first step on behalf of fairness in women&#8217;s sports.&#8221;
&#8220;FINA prioritized competitive fairness which is more than any other large governing body has done thus far,&#8221; Gaines said, adding that she appreciated that FINA took into account science and the perspectives of other athletes.
&#8220;The only downfall is now that there is a set age to be transgender and allowed to compete as a female, will children be more swayed into transitioning without fully understanding what they&#8217;re doing and committing to?&#8221; Gaines asked.
Thomas&#8217; teammate who spoke with The Daily Wire also praised FINA for listening to the science, but voiced a similar concern that young swimmers could be pushed into transitioning earlier.
&#8220;The boys are actually slower than the girls under the age of 12. So scientifically speaking, that is actually the correct year to pick,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Socially, I don&#8217;t agree with that.&#8221;
&#8220;I think really, scientifically, this policy makes a lot of sense, and I&#8217;m also really happy that it&#8217;s also going to be put into place in water polo,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Water polo is a very aggressive sport. People get their suits pulled down. They get clawed. I definitely don&#8217;t want to see biological men on women&#8217;s water polo teams.&#8221;
Thomas&#8217; teammate also said that she had to share a locker room with Thomas while they were on the team together and is concerned about the larger issue of allowing biological men into female-only spaces.
She added that just because Thomas did not win every single event does not mean the national champion did not enjoy an unfair advantage.
&#8220;There have been a lot of athletes that have been caught for doping and they didn&#8217;t necessarily win gold,&#8221; Thomas&#8217; teammate said.

Overwhelming majorities in four states want more transparency regarding children’s school curriculums, according to new polling provided exclusively to The Daily Wire.
Most registered voters in Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, and Louisiana agreed that parents should be able to compare curriculums between schools prior to enrolling their children so they can find the best learning environment for their child, polling from the Goldwater Institute showed.
About 87% of Louisiana voters agreed that parents should be able to compare curriculums beforehand, along with 72% in Missouri, 71% in Iowa, and 64% in Kansas.
Notably, that includes hefty majorities in every state of adults in their 20s, 30s, and 40s, who are more likely than older adults to have school-aged children. Of adults from 35 to 44, 85% in Louisiana, 75% in Missouri, 78% in Iowa, and 74% in Kansas said they supported parental curriculum access before enrollment.
The polling surveyed between 500 and 768 voters in each state and was conducted in late March and early April by Sherpa Public Affairs. Each state’s survey had between a 3.5% and 4.4% margin of error.
Curriculum transparency has become a hot-button issue for many parents across the country in the last year.
In March, the Iowa legislature <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.carrollspaper.com/news/local-legislators-speak-on-education-bills-requiring-more-transparency-from-public-teachers/article_533ce478-bf24-11ec-9d67-6774907de7ed.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">considered</a> several versions of a bill that would have required public schools to give parents access to their classroom materials and library catalogs.
Around the same time, Missouri <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.news-leader.com/story/news/politics/2022/06/09/missouri-ag-demands-springfield-public-schools-provide-student-surveys-document-portal-race-gender/7556679001/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">considered</a> a similar “parents’ bill of rights,” one version of which would have allowed parents to sue public school districts for violating parents’ rights to access school curriculums.
Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.wftv.com/news/local/happening-this-morning-gov-desantis-speak-daytona-beach/IBOZKTZXXFD37KGVALI5RQW4EM/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">signed</a> a curriculum transparency bill in late March, while bills in other states have stalled.
Some parents have found themselves in nightmare situations over this issue. When Rhode Island mom Nicole Solas asked her school district what her kindergartener would be learning, she got sued by a major teachers union.
“When I called the school and asked, they said that they don’t call children &#8216;boys’ and ‘girls,’” she <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.goldwaterinstitute.org/our-childrens-education-is-not-a-game-we-need-academic-transparency/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. “They said that they refrained from using gendered terminology in the classroom, and that they embed the values of gender identity into the classroom at every grade at an age-appropriate level. When I asked about Critical Race Theory, they said that they teach 5 year olds on the first Thanksgiving, this ridiculous question where they say, ‘What could have been done differently on the first Thanksgiving?’”
The school district informed Solas that the public records she requested on the curriculum would cost $74,000, and she was sued by the nation’s largest public-sector teachers union, the National Education Association.
Even public school teachers have spoken out about the transparency issues they have observed.
Kali Fontanilla was a high school English language teacher in the Salinas, California, school district when she <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.goldwaterinstitute.org/teacher-blows-the-whistle-on-critical-race-theory-in-california-schools/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">blew the whistle</a> on Critical Race Theory (CRT) content in her classroom.
During the pandemic lockdown, Fontanilla was sharing the online remote learning platform with her fellow teachers and noticed that her students were failing their required ethnic studies course, including about 50% of the boys. When she looked at the curriculum, she was alarmed to find what she described as “Critical Race Theory 101 for my students,” including the definition of critical race theory, implicit bias, and inherent racism.
“I think what has happened is our public school systems and the curriculum makers have gone unchecked for so long,” Fontanilla told The Daily Wire. “And we just let it happen like that frog in a boiling pot and it’s slowly heating up. We didn’t even realize, and now the water is boiling and we’re like, our kids are being damaged currently. And so we need to do a lot of work to undo all of this garbage that’s in our schools right now, and on top of it, our kids are failing.”
Eventually, Fontanilla resigned from her teaching position and started her own fully accredited academy, the <a href="https://www.thinkexodus.org/about">Exodus Institute</a>, which includes a K-12 online school.

A Canadian father who was jailed for opposing his child&#8217;s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/gender">gender</a> transition is still fighting in court.
In 2018, the dad was informed that a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/health-care">hospital</a> would start administering cross-sex hormones to his child. Thanks to a new <a href="https://www.canadianlawyermag.com/practice-areas/litigation/bc-court-of-appeal-finds-trans-teen-can-seek-hormone-treatment-without-parents-consent/325135#:~:text=In%20A.B.,to%20hormone%20treatment%20under%20s.">Canadian law</a>, doctors may administer transgender drugs to children without parental consent.
Four years later, the dad, whose identity was put under a publication ban by the court to protect his child, is still fighting in the British Columbia Courts over the loss of his parental rights in the medical transitioning of his teen daughter.
After the dad spoke out against his child&#8217;s gender transition, he was arrested in March of last year and fined $30,000 for misgendering his daughter, who was 13 at the time. He was also charged with criminal contempt of court. He was initially denied bail and held in jail, but he is currently free on bail and awaiting his trial, which is slated for November.
The father has incurred &#8220;enormous losses and expenses&#8221; over the ordeal and has been &#8220;dragged through a kind of legal hell,&#8221; according to his GoGetFunding <a href="https://gogetfunding.com/bc-father-fighting-medical-transitioning-of-children/">page</a>. The page has raised nearly $80,000 as of Friday morning.
The Daily Wire&#8217;s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/search/news?refinementList%5Bpost_author.display_name%5D=&amp;refinementList%5Btaxonomies.post_tag%5D%5B0%5D=Matt%20Walsh&amp;page=1">Matt Walsh</a> interviewed the Canadian dad for his documentary &#8220;<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/videos/what-is-a-woman">What Is A Woman</a>,&#8221; released earlier this month.
&#8220;I&#8217;m not able to leave BC [British Columbia]. I can&#8217;t even go to another province in Canada right now, and it&#8217;s because I&#8217;m technically out on bail,&#8221; the dad told Walsh in the film.
The dad told Walsh that his ex-wife brought their daughter to an appointment at British Columbia Children&#8217;s Hospital. The dad said he trusted the hospital to perform a thorough evaluation and thought, &#8220;good, this is going to be the end of it all. They&#8217;re going to clearly see that my child is not the opposite sex.&#8221;
He got a call less than an hour into that appointment, however, informing him that &#8220;they were going to pump her full of cross-sex hormones within the hour,&#8221; he said.
&#8220;And I put a halt to that. I said no,&#8221; the dad said. &#8220;They agreed to stop for the moment. They figured, well let&#8217;s get the dad on board too &#8230; I said it&#8217;s not going to happen.&#8221;
After that, the dad said he got a letter from the hospital in December 2018 saying that under British Columbia&#8217;s <a href="https://www.bclaws.gov.bc.ca/civix/document/id/complete/statreg/96223_01">Infants Act</a> the hospital would be starting his daughter on cross-sex hormones, and he had two weeks to respond with legal action if he chose to.
&#8220;So that&#8217;s how I ended up in court, because I did respond with legal action,&#8221; the dad said.
Meanwhile, he was publicly referring to his daughter as &#8220;she.&#8221; In Canada, it can be <a href="https://www.cbc.ca/cbcdocspov/features/canadas-gender-identity-rights-bill-c-16-explained">considered</a> criminal violence to refuse to use someone&#8217;s preferred pronouns, the dad said, so the dad ended up in jail.
&#8220;It is no different than let&#8217;s say I were to take a broomstick and whack one of my kids over the head,&#8221; the dad said.
His daughter was still on cross-sex hormones as of Walsh&#8217;s interview.

As the U.S. barrels toward allowing more children with gender dysphoria to get medical intervention to affirm their new <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/gender">gender</a> identities, several European countries that have been ahead of the U.S. on this issue are pumping the brakes.
Some <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/europe">countries</a> initially embraced puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones for children several years ago, but are now taking a step back.
The United Kingdom, Sweden, Finland, and France have all taken steps recently to pull back on transgender medical treatments for seemingly gender-dysphoric children.
Sweden has been one of the most progressive nations on transgender health care for decades. Back in 1972, Sweden became the first country to allow transgender people to change their legal gender.
Last year though, Swedish hospitals <a href="https://segm.org/sites/default/files/Karolinska%20_Policy_Statement_English.pdf">halted</a> the use of puberty blockers in five of the country&#8217;s six clinics for minors with gender dysphoria. The last clinic only uses puberty blockers in clinical trials. The country now emphasizes psychotherapy for minors with gender dysphoria instead.
The Swedish hospitals cited a U.K. court ruling in their decision.
The U.K. took a step back in December 2020 when the High Court in London effectively suspended prescribing puberty blockers for children 15 and under and recommended that teens ages 16 to 18 get court approval before going on hormones. However, that decision was <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-58598186">overturned</a> in September.
The case was brought by Keira Bell, who argued the U.K.’s <a href="https://tavistockandportman.nhs.uk/care-and-treatment/our-clinical-services/gender-identity-development-service-gids/">only</a> youth gender identity clinic should have pushed back more when she expressed her desire to transition to male as a teen and had surgery to remove her breasts.
In April of last year, before the U.K. court&#8217;s initial decision in favor of Bell was overturned, the U.K.’s health advisory board, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/health-56601386">found</a> that the evidence for prescribing puberty blockers to minors with gender dysphoria was &#8220;very low&#8221; and studies of the treatment were small and &#8220;subject to bias and confounding.&#8221;
In France, the country&#8217;s National Academy of Medicine warned medical professionals in a March <a href="https://www.academie-medecine.fr/la-medecine-face-a-la-transidentite-de-genre-chez-les-enfants-et-les-adolescents/?lang=en">press release</a> that the spike in young people saying they want to medically transition genders may be due to social contagion and urged medical personnel to approach this issue with extreme caution.
&#8220;Whatever the mechanisms involved in adolescents &#8211; excessive engagement with social media, greater social acceptability, or influence by those in one’s social circle &#8211; this epidemic-like phenomenon manifests itself in the emergence of cases or even clusters of cases in the adolescents’ immediate surroundings,&#8221; read the Academy&#8217;s press release.
&#8220;Great medical caution must be taken in children and adolescents, given the vulnerability, particularly psychological, of this population and the many undesirable effects and even serious complications that can be caused by some of the therapies available,&#8221; the press release said.
Finland has walked a similar path. In June 2020, Finland began deemphasizing medical treatment for children with gender dysphoria and recommended prioritized psychotherapy instead. Finland did not ban puberty blockers outright, but said they should be prescribed on a case-by-case basis after &#8220;careful consideration.&#8221;
&#8220;Surgical treatments are not part of the treatment methods for dysphoria caused by gender-related conflicts in minors,&#8221; <a href="https://palveluvalikoima.fi/documents/1237350/22895008/Summary_minors_en.pdf/aaf9a6e7-b970-9de9-165c-abedfae46f2e/Summary_minors_en.pdf">said</a> Finland&#8217;s Council for Choices in Health Care, which issues recommendations on public health care.
The Council also said more information is needed about the &#8220;effects of different treatment methods on the mental wellbeing, social capacity and quality of life of children and youth,&#8221; as well as on the &#8220;disadvantages of procedures and on people who regret them.&#8221;
&#8220;It is quite clear that some of the most progressive countries in Europe are choosing to reconsider their use of medicalizing children’s identities and, in Europe, puberty blockers are fast becoming the most controversial aspect of gender treatment paths for children,&#8221; said Stella O&#8217;Malley, a U.K.-based psychotherapist and author who works with young people.
O&#8217;Malley added that &#8220;we simply don’t know who will go on to transition as adults and who will come to accept their bodies as they are,&#8221; she told The Daily Wire.
While some of Europe has pulled back, other countries allow children to access transgender hormone therapy at disturbingly young ages. As of 2018, Denmark and Slovenia <a href="https://fra.europa.eu/en/publication/2017/mapping-minimum-age-requirements-concerning-rights-child-eu/access-transgender-hormone-therapy">allowed</a> 15-year-olds to obtain hormones without parental consent, while Latvia allowed 14-year-olds to do so, and Poland and Spain put their minimum age only slightly higher at 16.
Canada has <a href="https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/canada-transgender-treatment">rushed</a> to <a href="https://www.cmaj.ca/content/191/3/E69">promote</a> gender dysphoric children receiving hormone treatments, as well as permanent procedures like double mastectomies.
In the U.S., the issue of medical intervention for gender dysphoric children has pitted opposing government forces against one another.
The Biden administration has promoted “early” transgender surgeries and hormone treatments as “crucial” for the health of minors who identify as transgender and non-binary.
Meanwhile, last year, Arizona, Alabama, Arkansas, and Texas banned minors from receiving surgeries related to gender transition. The last three states also banned cross-sex hormones and puberty blockers for minors. Only Alabama&#8217;s law is still standing, however, after the others were struck down in federal court. At least 15 states are considering similar pieces of legislation relating to gender dysphoric minors and medical treatments.
Critics have warned that research and data on gender dysphoric children and how various treatment paths affect them is limited. One recent <a href="https://www.heritage.org/gender/report/puberty-blockers-cross-sex-hormones-and-youth-suicide">report</a> even suggested that puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones in teens could actually increase the teen suicide rate, rather than decrease it as advocates claim.

Conservative commentator Allie Beth Stuckey was suspended, then reinstated on Twitter on Monday night, for a tweet critical of a Fox News segment on transgender children.
Stuckey, who hosts the Blaze Media podcast “Relatable” and is a prominent conservative Christian presence on the social media platform, tweeted her reaction to the cable network&#8217;s coverage.
“I’m stunned that Fox News ran a segment celebrating a girl whose parents ‘transitioned’ her into a boy when she was five because she apparently told them she was a boy ‘before [she] could talk.’ Absolutely maddening &amp; heartbreaking,” Stuckey tweeted on Friday.
Twitter responded by locking her account for violating the platform&#8217;s &#8220;rules against hateful conduct.&#8221;
“You may not promote violence against, threaten, or harass other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or serious disease,” read a message from Twitter.
Stuckey appealed Twitter&#8217;s decision, and other prominent conservatives expressed their support for her.
&#8220;Just got word from @conservmillen that she’s been locked out for hateful conduct. Fox News shocked viewers on Friday when it ran a glowing <a href="https://video.foxnews.com/v/6307583800112#sp=show-clips">segment</a> about the family of transgender teen Ryland Whittington, who, despite being a biological female, was socially transitioned as a male at the tender age of five.
The network described the fourteen-year-old, whose voice sounds like that of a pubescent boy, as a &#8220;typical Southern California teenager.&#8221;
&#8220;Before Ryland could speak he managed to tell his parents that he is a boy,&#8221; the segment stated. Ryland&#8217;s mother said it was &#8220;painful&#8221; for Ryland to wear girls&#8217; clothes even before the age of five. The network even cited Ryland&#8217;s mom&#8217;s &#8220;conservative faith&#8221; as a factor in their decision to support their daughter&#8217;s transition.
Ryland first went viral in a family YouTube <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yAHCqnux2fk">video</a> in 2014, and Ryland&#8217;s mother has written a book titled &#8220;Raising Ryland.&#8221;
&#8220;What extraordinary courage displayed by Ryland, his sister Brinley, father Jeff, and mom Hillary. I want to thank the Whittington family for speaking to us. It&#8217;s not easy, particularly at a time when transgender issues have been politicized. People are afraid of what they do not understand, Dana. This family hopes their story will lead to more understanding, more acceptance, and ultimately more love,&#8221; correspondent Bryan Llenas remarked to anchor Dana Perino.
The segment also promoted the transgender activist talking point that children and young people whose new gender identities aren&#8217;t affirmed are vulnerable to suicide. &#8220;I&#8217;d rather have a living son than a dead daughter,&#8221; Ryland&#8217;s mom said in the segment.
However, many have criticized the studies that have served as the basis for such claims. For example, at least one <a href="https://www.heritage.org/gender/report/puberty-blockers-cross-sex-hormones-and-youth-suicide">study</a> even shows that suicide rates among children have increased in states where children have easy access to puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones without parental consent. Other studies, such as a recent Stanford <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0261039">study</a> and a <a href="https://www.jahonline.org/article/S1054-139X(21)00568-1/fulltext">study</a> by the Trevor Project, omit important variables such as the relationship the child had with their parents and the pre-existing mental state of the child, <a href="https://www.heritage.org/gender/report/puberty-blockers-cross-sex-hormones-and-youth-suicide">numerous</a> <a href="https://dailycaller.com/2022/03/06/transgender-activism-pharmaceutical-studies-children/">reports</a> have pointed out.

The number of younger teenagers who identify as transgender has nearly doubled in the U.S. over the last few years, according to a new report.
The number of transgender people aged 13 to 17 in the U.S. is almost twice what it was in 2017, according to a <a href="https://williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu/publications/trans-adults-united-states/">report</a> from the Williams Institute, a research institute based at the UCLA School of Law.
In 2017, the Williams Institute researchers estimated that around 0.7 percent of younger teens were transgender in the U.S., about 150,000 teens. Now, they estimate that number has doubled to 300,000.
Teens and young adults make up a much larger portion of the transgender population compared to adults. About 43% of the 1.6 million transgender people in the U.S. are young adults or teenagers, and nearly one in five are minors ages 13 to 17. This is despite the younger teen demographic being less than 8% of the total U.S. population. In the same vein, young adults 18 to 24 make up just under a quarter of the transgender population, but they are only 11% of the total U.S. population.
About 1.4% of all teens 13 to 17 identify as transgender, while 1.3% of young adults 18 to 24 do so. Meanwhile, only 0.5% of adults identify as transgender, according to the study.
Adults 25 to 64 tended to identify as transgender less than their younger counterparts. That older age group makes up well over half, 62%, of the U.S. population, but less than half, 47%, of the transgender population.
As might be expected, seniors showed the same trend. People over 65 make up 20% of the U.S. population, but they are only 10% of the transgender population.
The report&#8217;s data came from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention&#8217;s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, as well as the agency&#8217;s Youth Risk Behavior Survey.
Many medical professionals have in recent years lent their full-throated support to minors receiving puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and in some cases surgical transitions, which can mean double mastectomies and bottom surgery.
Now though, some medical professionals are speaking out and warning about the dangers of rushing to medically transition a teenager or young person who says they identify as the gender opposite their biological one.
&#8220;It is notable that this rise is predominantly evident among teenagers and young adults – if it was spread out among all age groups then we would be merely witnessing a correction taking place, where people who previously felt unable to live as trans now felt free to do so. But this isn’t happening; instead something else is going on among teenagers and young people and it is imperative that clinicians, educators, and policy-makers carry out an in-depth analysis on this population,&#8221; said Stella O&#8217;Malley, a psychotherapist who works with young people.
O&#8217;Malley added that there are many &#8220;untrue statistics&#8221; related to transgender people, especially when it comes to suicide.
&#8220;Right now the data suggests that the risk of suicide remains both post-affirmation and post-transition. Sadly, there is no magic solution to life and suggesting that affirmation or medical transition will fix a person’s suicidality is a dangerous promise to make,&#8221; O&#8217;Malley told The Daily Wire.
Another physician blamed the rise in gender incongruence in the population on a &#8220;social contagion&#8221; that is &#8220;fueled by social media&#8221; and &#8220;fully supported by &#8216;woke&#8217; medical organizations.&#8221;
&#8220;We know that a very high percentage (60-98%) of kids who are given support will no longer identify as being the wrong sex as adults. Sex cannot be changed; it begins at conception and is solidified during embryologic development in the womb,&#8221; said Dr. Michael K. Laidlaw, MD, a board-certified physician and endocrinology specialist in California.
&#8220;There is no scientific way to turn a female body into that of a fertile adult male, nor is there a way to turn a male body into that of a fertile adult female,&#8221; Laidlaw told The Daily Wire.
Laidlaw noted as well that cross-sex hormones come with significant risks, including infertility, deadly blood clots, heart attacks, increased cancer risks of the breasts and ovaries, liver dysfunction, worsening psychological illness, and other serious conditions.
