The 16-year-old shooter who killed three children and one teacher on October 15 at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, had a family history marked by his father’s violence and alcohol abuse, according to a new report.

The gunman, who was shot and killed by an armed parent during the attack and is not being named per The Daily Wire’s mass shooter policy, was a former student at the school. The shotgun he used was a birthday gift from his mother, CBS News reported, citing sources.

According to a report published Tuesday by The New York Post, the gunman’s father had a history of alcohol abuse. He was arrested and sentenced to serve 48 months in prison after assaulting the boy’s mother and threatening her with a knife, but was released early and petitioned a judge to lift the restraining order against him so that he could see his son.

In letters to a judge following his domestic violence arrest, the father acknowledged a history of alcohol abuse and said he had previously been jailed several times. After his early release, he was arrested again for allegedly head-butting a police officer and for using alcohol and marijuana in violation of the terms of his parole. The Post reported that it was unclear whether he was convicted in that case.

Police said the teenager shot his way into Silver Rail Elementary School and opened fire in a special education classroom. He had previously received special education services at the school. He killed three students — aged 5, 8, and 11 — and 25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert. He also reportedly shot a 7-year-old student in the face. That student, who was in a wheelchair, was hospitalized. A 54-year-old teacher was also shot.

The shooting ended when an armed parent, Kaylub Giamanco, followed the gunman into the school and shot and killed him. By then, a teacher had tackled the shooter and was grappling with him for control of the weapon.

Giamanco called his mother shortly after shooting the gunman, she told CBS News Sacramento.

“He said, ‘Mom, I just shot and killed somebody.’ I said, ‘Kaylub, tell me about it.’ He said, ‘A man went into my daughter’s school and shot kids,’ and he said, ‘and I looked at him point-blank, and I shot and killed him, Mom,'” Kenda Freeman, Giamanco’s mother, told the outlet.
