Oprah Winfrey Sparks Online Debate After Suggesting Gift That Costs ‘Like A Hundred And Some Dollars’

Oprah Winfrey has ignited debate after suggesting a Christmas gift that costs “like a hundred and some dollars,” then appearing surprised when the person to whom she made the suggestion balked at the price.

The 68-year-old former talk show host appeared in a TikTok in which a stranger asks her for a gift idea for his mother, reports Insider.

Winfrey pauses, then suggests “a beautiful red jewelry box.” When the stranger notes that such a gift is “too expensive” for him, the former talk show host responds, “No it’s not. It’s really not. It’s like a hundred and some dollars.”

The questioner presses Winfrey, asking a second time for a gift idea “a little lower in my price budget.” The host appears shocked, saying, “Lower than $100?”

After the video surfaced, some reacted with shock that Winfrey thought $100 should be in a person’s price range, while others noted that for the billionaire, $100 bucks probably wasn’t a lot.

Winfery followed up her initial suggestion by telling the man to write up a list of the “top ten reasons” he loves his mother, and to give it to her with a “beautiful card.”

“She was SHOOK that $100 was too expensive. ‘Do they even make things that cost less than $100?’” read one comment with more than 1,900 likes. “The judgment when he said $100 was too expensive.”

Another responded, “She said oh you poor? I got a better gift for you.” At the time of publication, the comment had more than 5,000 likes.

“Oprah said I’m not even gonna try to give you a suggestion for $50,” another person continued. “Here you go free from your heart.”

A defender of Winfrey wrote, “I think Oprah handled this and answered this very well,” one person commented.

“Oprah is a billionaire but she gave a gift suggestion that’s $100…but ya’ll saying she’s out of touch lol,” said another.

“Most of her favorite things gifts is gonna be like $100 or more,” another person added. “She gave a very good option for a Christmas present for someone who has a job.”
