The U.S. Olympic finished on top after an 11th-hour gold-medal win from the American women on the basketball court. Their win brought the overall total gold medal count to 40, which would have resulted in a tie with Communist China if the United States had not absolutely dominated competition for silver and bronze medals as well.

The United States finished with 40 gold medals, 44 silver medals, and 42 bronze medals — 126 medals total. China, also with 40 gold medals, delivered only 27 silver medals and 24 bronze medals — 91 total. Japan followed with 20 gold medals.

In total medals, no one — not even Communist China — came close to the U.S. (126). China finished a distant second with 91, and Great Britain is in third place with 65. Host nation France finished with a respectable 64, 16 of which were gold, according to the latest official count.
