In the latest <a href="https://www.prageru.com/video/no-past-no-future/">video from PragerU</a>, Douglas Murray, author of <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Madness-Crowds-Gender-Race-Identity/dp/1635579988">The Madness of Crowds</a>, begins by asking the question, “What kind of future do we have if we destroy our past?” Has anyone who has &#8220;pulled down a statue of Churchill, Lincoln, or Columbus” stopped to ask themselves this question, Murray muses.
“The presumption that we can stand in perfect judgment over the lives of historical figures,” Murray says, “is not merely foolish and unfair, it’s dangerous.”
Murray explains this assertion by asking us to consider the message sent by statue destroyers. “They are saying that people in history should have known what we know,” which is equivalent to insisting that “they should have known the future.”
This view is believed by  an increasing number of people, Murray says, simply because “it’s what they are taught.” The education system “long ago prioritized ‘empathy’ over facts,” while promoting the idea that “the ultimate point of history is not to learn lessons from it, but to judge it from the pre-ordained left-wing conclusions about such ill-defined concepts as social justice, equity and tolerance.”
This approach to education drives students to become &#8220;judge, jury and executioner over issues that they (and increasingly their teachers) know little or nothing about,” made possible by the fact that “no one has bothered to teach them the nuance, complexity and context that is history.”
In addition, Murray says, such attitudes also “breeds arrogance,” based on the view that we are better than those who came before us solely because we “know things these people did not know.” This leads to the view that “a new, ‘better’ history must take the place of the old one.”
As an example, Murray argues that “this impulse has culminated in The 1619 Project,” which makes “the arrival of the first African slaves into the American colonies the foundational date of the American republic.” In this “new history,” the American Revolution becomes nothing other than an attempt to protect the Founders’ interest in slavery. 
“These men — some of the most remarkable humans to have lived at any time — are to be understood simply by their attitude toward this one issue,” Murray says.
Not only that, the 1619 Project’s goal of portraying America “as exceptional only in one respect: in so far as being exceptionally bad,” is a “purposefully destructive view of history, and “one intended to pull down rather than build up.”
Murray continues to argue that a “healthy, humane and — in the truest sense — liberal mind does not view history as a mere playpen for our moral judgment.” Instead, “it recognizes that people in the past acted on the information they had, just as we do today.”

Murray acknowledges that history of course contains elements of immorality or evil, but that such instances must be judged in the context of their time.
“Sure, it would have been nice if the Founders of America had abolished slavery in its Constitution. Some, in fact, tried very hard to do so,” Murray admits. “But had they been unwilling to compromise, there would be no Constitution and no United States. All the sacrifices of the Revolution would have been lost. So, a compromise balancing the interests of the northern states and the southern states was reached.”
Unfortunately, “the woke mind abhors these subtleties.” Instead, they prefer to assume possession of what is right, “and that everybody before our current age — year zero — should have known better.”
Murray continues to add further context to figures of the past, saying that they “did the best they could under the circumstances in which they found themselves,” and that “their efforts largely succeeded is why we are here.”
Using Isaac Newton’s humility as a further example, Murray presents today’s Left as a movement which rejects the idea that “we stand on anyone&#8217;s shoulders.” 
“It imagines that if we could only liberate ourselves from the dusty, misguided and misinformed ideas of the past then we might see further, fly still higher,” Murray says. “This view is wrong.”
Murray concludes the video by reminding us of the chronological reality in which we live, and the inescapable role those who came before us played.
“Divorced from our past we would be utterly lost. We would not rise, but plummet. We would be forced to start again with far less insight, and with far poorer examples as our guides,” Murray says. “Ironically, thanks to the statue destroyers, the great figures of the past have never looked greater.”

In the latest <a href="https://www.prageru.com/video/there-is-no-apolitical-classroom/">video</a> from PragerU, Max Eden, senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, asks parents a fundamental question: “Do you know what’s going on in your kid’s school?”
“If no,” Eden answers, “now would be a good time to take a look.”
Eden begins by explaining that the education establishment has decided to discard their prior purpose of teaching “the three R’s — reading, writing and arithmetic,” and have instead decided that their purpose is “to awaken students to the fact that they live in a country that has been, remains and will probably always be, racist.”
Eden references the American Association of School Administrators (AASA), who recently <a href="https://aasa.org/content.aspx?id=44754">announced</a> that &#8220;At a time of obscene inequities…merely trying to compensate is not enough… AASA’s work… must go further and become actively anti-racist.”
The problem underlying such a seemingly simple statement is that “anti-racism” is not about treating everyone the same for the educational elite, and is far from “a version of the Golden Rule.”
“Anti-racism, in its current formulation, does not mean equal treatment of others. It is an all-encompassing ideology that demands that white people accept that their behavior is either implicitly or explicitly racist — and has been for at least 400 years,” says Eden. “The Catch-22 here is that to say you’re not racist only proves how racist you really are. That is, you are so racist you don’t even know it. And if this accusation upsets you, that’s proof of your white fragility.” 
And, he underscores, “the only way to be ‘anti-racist’ is to embrace and advocate the ideas and policies of the left.”
The idea of “anti-racism” is supported on a broad level, with Education Week’s “Classroom Q&amp;A” blog <a href="https://www.edweek.org/teaching-learning/opinion-educators-must-realize-that-there-is-no-neutral-position-on-issues-of-racial-justice/2020/06">telling</a> teachers that “As Ibram X. Kendi (the author of ‘How to Be an Anti-Racist’) would say, there is no ‘not racist.’ There is only racist and anti-racist. Your silence favors the status quo and the violently oppressive harm it does to black and brown folk everywhere.”
“What Kendi is saying is, if you don’t voice active agreement with him, you are a racist,&#8221; says Eden. &#8220;And if you treat people equally regardless of race, you’re also a racist.” He then argues that rather than fighting racism and bigotry, “Anti-racists embrace racial discrimination, as long as it’s done on their terms,” turning “the Martin Luther King concept of racial equality on its head.”
As an example of idea leaders driving this movement, Eden cites Lorena German, who chairs the Committee on Anti-Racism for the National Council on the Teaching of English. During the waves of riots which gripped American streets in 2020, German “wrote that arsonists should serve as a model for teachers,” <a href="https://twitter.com/nenagerman/status/1266722828214304768?lang=en">tweeting</a>, “Educators: what are you burning? Your White-centered curriculum?&#8230; The school’s racist policies? Your racist ass principal? The funding for the police in schools vs counselors? WHAT ARE YOU BURNING???!!?!?!?!?”

“German’s call to commit arson may have been metaphorical,” Eden states, “but her call to get rid of the traditional school curriculum is not.” 
For example, a <a href="https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5bc5da7c3560c36b7dab1922/t/5ed12955d45eb54e7a0854a3/1590765951611/CEJ_CRSEBook_v7.pdf">lesson plan</a> created by the New York City Culturally Responsive Education Working Group, “Transforming Our Public Schools: A Guide to Culturally Responsive and Sustaining Education,” <a href="https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5bc5da7c3560c36b7dab1922/t/5ed12955d45eb54e7a0854a3/1590765951611/CEJ_CRSEBook_v7.pdf">tells</a> teachers that “the whole Western canon is rife with horrible stories and atrocities of who we are as people of color,” and the National Committee on Social Studies has <a href="https://twitter.com/EcNcss/status/1268200272817504258">promised</a> to “flood our children with counter messages…until there is no racial inequality in economic opportunity, no racial inequality in education, no racial inequality in incarceration rates, and no brutality from police and others.”
Eden then argues that these strategies sound “a lot more like political indoctrination than education.”
“We all might wish that as cultural and political polarization reaches into more and more areas of American life, schools could remain an apolitical oasis where children can learn to read, write, and develop skills of socialization,” Eden says. “But if that’s what you want for your children, then just know that anti-racist educators think that you are part of the problem.”

Citing another example, Eden quotes a writer for Teaching Tolerance, a project of the Southern Poverty Law Center, who <a href="https://www.tolerance.org/magazine/what-antiracism-really-means-for-educators">said</a>, “Anti-racist educators recognize that schools are doing exactly what they were built to do in this country: Exclude. Silence. Erase. Promote white supremacy… an anti-racist approach to schooling could very well mean an ending to schools as we know them.”
“That is certainly true,” Eden asserts.
Eden concludes his video with two clear choices for parents. If you’re happy with the National Council on the Teaching of English <a href="https://ncte.org/blog/2017/08/there-is-no-apolitical-classroom-resources-for-teaching-in-these-times/">insisting</a> “there is no apolitical classroom,” and supportive of the educational elite’s clear lesson plan, “you can send Johnny and Jennifer off to school with a glad heart.”
If not, you “better talk to the principal, or get ready with Plan B,” Eden warns.

The latest PragerU video, brought to us by Carol Swain, retired Professor of Political Science and Law at Vanderbilt University and host of the Be the People Podcast, addresses the issues of victimhood culture and racial division in a very personal way.
Swain begins by telling us how her story ends: as “a tenured, award-winning professor of political science at an Ivy League university and then at one of the leading universities in the South.”
The retired professor then goes back to her inauspicious beginnings, explaining that she grew up “in rural Virginia literally dirt poor.” Dropping out of school in the eighth grade, Swain had three children by the time she was 20. Despite considering herself a reasonably modest person, she says, even she has to “admit that’s quite a journey.” 
So, how did she work her way up to be an influential member of Vanderbilt&#8217;s law school and a national voice? “I worked hard,” she says. “Not crazy, 24/7 hard. Just hard. I made good decisions. Not brilliant, three-dimensional chess decisions. Just good ones.”
In addition, she “met people along the way who helped [her] and sincerely wanted to see [her] succeed, not because they had something to gain, but because they were decent people. “Almost all of these individuals,” she adds, “were white.”
“But mostly,” Swain says, “I think I was blessed in one crucial way”: she was born in America, “a true land of opportunity for anyone of any color or background,” a country in which “where you start your life does not determine where you end up.” 
This works both ways, of course. In the United States, “you can start out with every advantage and waste them all, or start out with nothing and become a success.”
The difference in your life trajectory is heavily determined by your &#8220;attitude,&#8221; which she describes as &#8220;far more important than your race, gender, or social class in determining what you will accomplish in life.”
“When I hear young blacks, or anyone for that matter, talk about systemic racism,” Swain continues, “I don&#8217;t know whether to laugh or cry. I want to laugh because it’s such nonsense. I want to cry because I know it’s pushing untold numbers of young blacks into a dead end of self-pity and despair. Instead of seizing the amazing opportunities America offers them, they seize an excuse to explain why they&#8217;re not succeeding.”
Referencing her own story, Swain reminds viewers that she was “born into a world where systemic racism was real — no fooling, outright bigotry, back-of-the-bus real.” 
“Yes, that racism shaped the black experience, but even then it did not define it,” she says. “Systemic reform” was in the air when the “modern civil rights movement was in its infancy, and the leaders who fought for equal rights for blacks were men and women of all races.”
“They believed in America,” Swain says, “and were determined to see it live up to its highest ideals — ideals manifest in the Declaration of Independence, and the US Constitution.”

Swain then moves on to address the commonly-raised issue that “George Washington and Thomas Jefferson owned slaves.”
“I don&#8217;t think I ever thought about it,” Swain says. “If I did, I&#8217;d like to think that I would have had enough common sense to know that we can’t judge men who lived 250 years ago by the moral standards of our own day.”
Instead, Swain has focused on the fact that “Jefferson wrote the words in the Declaration of Independence that made slavery ultimately impossible; that all men are created equal.” Not only that, “Washington, Hamilton, Franklin, Adams and the rest of the Founders risked everything to make [her] world, [her] America, possible.”
“The truth is,” Swain says, “I cannot remember a time when I did not love America and feel pride in the belief that I live in the greatest country in the world.” She was confident that if she diligently pursued her ambitions, she could “leave the poverty of [her] early years, with all its abuse and depression, behind [her].”
Swain then demonstrates why her experience is so applicable for many who face the same problems, saying that she was “fortunate in another way,” having been “spared the life-sapping, negative messages about America that are crippling a generation of young people.”
The ideas young people are told to accept: “white privilege, whiteness as a form of property, unconscious racism, reparations, microaggressions, police have it out for blacks, that the United States was created to protect and promote slavery” are all poison, Swain says.
Making matters worse, these same young people are then “told to reject the ideas that can save them, the antidote: the success principles that enabled me and millions of other Americans to escape lives of poverty.”
“These principles aren’t complicated,” Swain argues. “Work hard, learn from your mistakes, take personal responsibility for your actions.”
When I made the decisions to get my high school equivalency, attend a community college, and then earn four additional college and university degrees,” Swain says, “I believed that my education would open doors. And it did.”
Swain ends with both a warning and an encouraging message for those following in her footsteps. 
“It was only when exposed to academic theories of oppression in graduate school that I was informed that because I was black, poor, and female, I could never do what I had already accomplished,&#8221; she explains. &#8220;Thank God, it was too late for these toxic messages to stop me. Don&#8217;t let them stop you.”

In the latest <a href="https://www.prageru.com/video/be-brave/">video from PragerU</a>, former Governor of South Carolina (2011 to 2017) and United States Ambassador to the United Nations (2017 to 2018) Nikki Haley encourages young Americans to &#8220;be brave&#8221; and push back against leftist efforts to denigrate the country.
Referencing her time as US Ambassador to the UN, Haley discusses the common problem in which “plain truth seems like a foreign concept,” where “speaking your mind can feel daunting,” and where “the founding principles of The United States of America are openly ridiculed.”
Haley begins by pointing out just “how strange things can get at the UN.” For example, the UN Human Rights Council “is dominated by some of the world’s worst human rights offenders,” while “true democracies, like Israel, are routinely abused,” and America, &#8220;the nation that has protected the God-given rights of hundreds of millions of people all over the globe,&#8221; is &#8220;openly criticized.”
“Most college campuses,” Haley continues, “have become as anti-American as the UN,” and “the only person who can set it right side up is you.” 
Haley asks viewers to “be brave,” “defend your right to speak out” and to “defend America.” Such actions should never involve rudeness or violence, but do require “having the facts and saying the truth with clarity and purpose,” while refusing to back down “even if your classmates or professor — or, in [Haley’s] case, the representatives of 193 governments — try to make you look foolish.”
To effectively defend America requires knowing American history, she states, starting with our country’s primary sources: “The Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Federalist Papers, George Washington’s farewell speech, the Gettysburg Address and Lincoln’s second inaugural.”
While exploring America’s history, Haley reminds us to compare “America to reality, not to utopia,” being careful to “judge people in the context of their time, not by the standards of our time.” 
“If you do that,” Haley says, “I have every confidence you’ll find yourself loving this country as much as I do.”
Haley then adds weight and context as we work to “have the courage to tell” America’s great story. “What the fight for racial equality was to prior generations,” Haley explains, “the fight for free speech and intellectual freedom is to your generation. You are on the front line. You are the rebel.”
With this in mind, Haley brings us back to the challenges we face today. “Never before, in my lifetime,” Haley warns, “can I remember when more Americans were as stifled or as constantly told what they’re allowed to think and what they’re allowed to say.”

The issue is that the same “fashionable ideas” pushed and promoted at home are often “the very same ones espoused by the thugs on the Human Rights Council: That America is racist, that capitalism — the only economic system to lift billions of people out of poverty — is the source of our problems, that socialism is bliss, that freedom of speech is not that important.”
In no uncertain terms, Haley rebukes these &#8220;dead wrong&#8221; ideas. “There is no question that America can and should improve,” Haley agrees. “But the constant slandering of American democracy and the opportunity it offers to everyone is a one-way street to a much worse future.” While also agreeing that “America isn’t perfect,” Haley states that “it’s also not an accident that we are the most generous, most prosperous, and most free country — for people of every race, ethnicity, and religion — in world history.”
The former US Ambassador to the UN concludes her message by saying that while “everything of value comes with a price,” that “price will be worth it because America is worth it.”
“Speaking the truth is often difficult. So, it takes courage to do so. Many have died to preserve America and liberty. No one is asking you to risk your life. But it is now your generation’s turn to step up. Or you will lose both your country and your freedom.”

In the latest <a href="https://www.prageru.com/video/what-is-big-green/">video from PragerU</a>, Rogan O’Handley, otherwise known as <a href="https://www.instagram.com/dc_draino/?hl=en">DC Draino</a>, shines the spotlight on “Big Green” — the environmental movement — which “doesn’t deal in billions” but in trillions and which has become &#8220;the richest, most powerful ‘Big’ in the world.”
“Until we see it for what is and reign it in,” O’Handley warns of the collection of organizations behind the movement, “it’s going to get even bigger.”
Big Green “intends to save the planet from oblivion” and is willing to “take over your life” and curtail your freedom in order to accomplish this mission. To &#8220;save the planet,&#8221; he says, the organizations require two things: “money, and power.” Yes, they already have a lot of both, but they&#8217;re hungry for more.
Before digging deeper, O’Handley defines his terms: When we say “Big Green” we are talking about the “major organizations that set the agenda for the movement,” which include Greenpeace, 350.Org, Nature Conservancy, Sierra Club, the World Wildlife Fund, and the collection of “politicians, bureaucrats, corporations, and media outlets who support and promote their agenda.”
O’Handley also clarifies a few important points before continuing, including that “the climate is changing,” that it appears to be “slowly warming,” that such changes “could cause serious environmental problems sometime in the distant future,” and that “industrialization probably plays a role in this warming process.”
While “reasonable people should be able to agree on this,” with <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qi6n_-wB154&amp;feature=youtu.be">Nancy Pelosi and Newt Gingrich</a> effectively doing so in the 1990s, O’Handley argues that “Big Green has no interest in being reasonable.” After all, being reasonable can stand in the way of money and power.
On the subject of money, many of the organizations O’Handley lists are massively wealthy. <a href="https://storage.googleapis.com/planet4-international-stateless/2020/06/a3d5435f-greenpeace-international-combined-financial-statement-2019.pdf">Greenpeace</a>, <a href="https://www.nature.org/content/dam/tnc/nature/en/documents/form-990-tax-return-fy19.pdf">Nature Conservancy</a>, <a href="https://c402277.ssl.cf1.rackcdn.com/financial_reports/34/reports/original/WWF_AR_2018_FINAL_FOR_WEB-2.pdf?1542819696">World Wildlife Fund</a>, and <a href="https://www.sierraclubfoundation.org/sites/sierraclubfoundation.org/files/2019_SierraClubFoundation_Audited%20Financial%20Statements.pdf">Sierra Club</a> all have hundreds of millions of dollars in financial assets. Not only that, multiple corporations routinely write “big checks” to Big Green, such as Citigroup, which committed <a href="https://www.citigroup.com/citi/sustainability/100billion.htm">$100 billion</a> to “combat climate change.”
“But the real money,” O’Handley warns, “is at the government level.” For example, under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the Obama administration directed more than <a href="https://www.novoco.com/sites/default/files/atoms/files/wtr3-2010final_0.pdf">$110 billion</a> to be spent on renewable energy “investments.”

“What the taxpayer got for this investment other than long-forgotten $500 million dollar boondoggles like <a href="https://fortune.com/2015/08/27/remember-solyndra-mistake/">Solyndra</a>,” O’Handley remarks, “is hard to say.”
This vast financial drain will not stop there. The Paris Climate Accord, for example, is estimated to cost the world <a href="https://www.pilotonline.com/opinion/columns/article_a9bd868b-1efb-574a-98e4-12cf7ebb5303.html">$1 trillion to $2 trillion</a> annually, and the minimum cost for The Green New Deal would be at least <a href="https://www.aspeninstitute.org/blog-posts/how-much-will-the-green-new-deal-cost/">$52 trillion</a> by some estimates.
But “money is only a means to an end” for Big Green, warns O&#8217;Handley. The end, he says, is power — more specifically, “the power to transform society into what they think it should be.” After all, Saikat Chakrabarti, the architect of the Green New Deal, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/magazine/wp/2019/07/10/feature/how-saikat-chakrabarti-became-aocs-chief-of-change/">described</a> the proposed legislation as follows: &#8220;it wasn’t originally a climate thing at all…we really think of it as a how-do-you-change-the-entire-economy thing.”
Regardless of where you stand on this objective, O’Handley says, “don’t pretend it&#8217;s about protecting the environment.” Instead, “it’s about transferring more and more power to the government — at every level: federal, state, local.”
O’Handley argues that such power is being sought through scare tactics, with alarmist tales of a burning planet, rising seas and our eventual destruction being inevitable — “unless we listen to those masters of disaster, Al Gore, Bill McKibben and Greta Thunberg.”
O’Handley then points out that these “horror stories” have had multiple adverse effects, such as “higher energy bills” because of “<a href="https://thehill.com/blogs/pundits-blog/energy-environment/302900-solar-energy-cant-survive-without-massive-subsidies">massive subsidies</a> for wind and solar power” and the impact of wind turbines on <a href="https://www.evwind.es/2020/10/01/the-realities-of-bird-and-bat-deaths-by-wind-turbines/77477#:~:text=The%20U.S.%20Fish%20and%20Wildlife,at%20wind%20farms%20each%20year">birdlife</a>. Despite “all the-planet-is-burning fear mongering,” O’Handley says, “the world is cleaner, healthier, and richer than it has ever been,” and “deaths from natural disasters are at <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/michaelshellenberger/2020/08/27/why-deaths-from-hurricanes-and-other-natural-disasters-are-lower-than-ever/?sh=4f33b62a1396">all-time lows</a>.”
The reason for this, according to O’Handley, is that “human beings adapt when faced with climate problems.” The answer to issues like rising sea levels is to “build taller and better sea walls.” It worked for the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/06/15/world/europe/climate-change-rotterdam.html">Netherlands</a>, with a large proportion of the country being below sea level. The answer to declining access to water is to “spread the gospel of drip irrigation and desalination.” It worked for Israel, with “<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/30/world/middleeast/water-revolution-in-israel-overcomes-any-threat-of-drought.html">more water than it needs</a>” despite being “in the middle of a desert.” The answer to achieving “clean energy” is to “build more nuclear power plants.” Sweden, often lauded by the Left, “<a href="https://www.world-nuclear.org/information-library/country-profiles/countries-o-s/sweden.aspx">gets half of its energy from nuclear</a>.”
O’Handley reminds us that “none of these simple, practical solutions makes much of an impact on Big Green. You don’t raise money off of common sense and you don’t get political power telling people how good things are and you certainly don’t become famous by being calm.”
“Big Green is not poor, not honest, and certainly not powerless,” O’Handley concludes. “It’s time we all plug in to that truth.”

PragerU’s latest <a href="https://www.prageru.com/video/price-transparency-how-to-fix-healthcare/">video</a> features Will Bruhn, co-founder of <a href="https://www.restoringmedicine.org">Restoring Medicine</a>, a grassroots movement of doctors, nurses, students, business leaders, and everyday citizens from across the United States that are demanding a more honest and fair health care system. The key to bringing down the soaring costs of health care, Bruhn contends, is price transparency. 
Bruhn begins by highlighting how prices for the same procedure can <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5450906/">differ wildly</a> by hospital or provider. When “researchers compared prices amongst 53 hospitals for a standard heart procedure,” not only did they find a “10-fold difference in price for the same procedure across hospitals, ranging from $44,000 dollars to $448,000 dollars,” but also that there was “no correlation between higher prices and better quality of care.” This is not an isolated incident, given that “<a href="https://healthcostinstitute.org/hcci-research/hmi-2019-service-prices">other studies</a> have shown there can be up to a 39-fold variation in price for a simple blood test across medical centers in the same metro area,&#8221; he adds.
The issue, Bruhn argues, is that “we have no idea how much we&#8217;re paying for healthcare services,” and when it comes to medical procedures, consumers are unable to “shop” for a satisfactory price in the same way as airline travel.
“Imagine if the airlines didn&#8217;t post prices,” Bruhn asks. Instead of knowing the price in advance, you will be billed after your flight because the airlines “don&#8217;t know what the cost of fuel will be that day.” This, Bruhn says, is “precisely what we are dealing with in American healthcare.”
Continuing, Bruhn states that the reason you don&#8217;t know how much a procedure or treatment costs prior to being treated is because medical billing is &#8220;a ridiculously complex dance between hospitals, insurance companies and various middlemen.” Not only do private agreements and “secret deals” determine the price, “medical costs are skyrocketing” for patients, meaning that “Americans are having more and more trouble paying the bill,” with <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/author-paints-grim-portrait-of-us-health-care-and-our-soaring-medical-debt-he-also-suggests-potential-solutions/2019/09/12/069485d6-d4cb-11e9-9610-fb56c5522e1c_story.html">nearly 20%</a> of Americans in some form of medical debt.
Those who have insurance through their employers, Bruhn warns, also aren’t safe, with wage increases failing to keep up with <a href="https://www.kff.org/report-section/ehbs-2019-section-6-worker-and-employer-contributions-for-premiums/">employee contributions</a> to healthcare premiums. The result? “That salary increase you so richly deserved was eaten up by the increased insurance premium you had to pay.”
What makes matters worse, according to Bruhn, is that “the ever-increasing cost of medical care” is not “reflected in the quality of the care you were getting,” with “little or no correlation between what you pay and what you get.” This raises the obvious question: “How do we get out of this mess?”

“A big part of the answer,” Bruhn says, “is price transparency, something almost every American wants,” with “almost <a href="https://www.texaspolicy.com/healthcare-price-transparency-wins-in-court/#:~:text=According%20to%20a%20national%20survey,in%20healthcare%20should%20be%20disclosed.&amp;text=Some%20advocates%20of%20the%20proposed,to%20make%20lower%20cost%20choices.%E2%80%9D">9 out of 10</a> Americans say they favor price transparency for medical services.”
Bruhn argues that this makes perfect sense, since Americans don’t have access to either of the two factors which ensure that they have the proper information to make an informed decision: price and the quality of a good or service. Not only that, since “<a href="https://thehill.com/opinion/healthcare/439308-price-transparency-is-key-to-a-functional-health-care-market">60% of healthcare is shoppable</a>,” such services present opportunity for competition.
Bruhn also states that the benefits wouldn’t end there. Citing an <a href="https://www.healthleadersmedia.com/welcome-ad?toURL=/clinical-care/wasteful-spending-us-healthcare-estimated-760-billion-935-billion">estimated</a> annual wastage of $760 billion in the US healthcare system due to “administrative complexities,” transparent upfront prices would allow medical centers to “cut a significant portion of their administrative staff that’s now involved in billing and debt collection.”
“Furthermore,” Bruhn continues, “if pricing was transparent, Americans could actually start pushing the market towards rewarding those who offer a fair and honest price, and pushing out the bad actors.”
Ultimately, more Americans would have access to healthcare.
Concluding, Bruhn argues that “we don&#8217;t need the government to take over our health care.” Instead, “we need the government to get out of the way.” Pointing to procedures like laser eye surgery, MRI testing and plastic surgery as positive examples, Bruhn says we should “let entrepreneurs innovate in the healthcare space,” since when they do, “prices go down and quality goes up.”
&#8220;Price transparency not only lowers costs, but it puts the patient back in the center of what medicine is all about: helping those in a time of need,&#8221; Bruhn concludes.

In the newest <a href="https://www.prageru.com/video/how-the-left-sees-the-world-power-race-and-class/">PragerU video</a>, Dennis Prager addresses a question which, on the surface, he suggests, doesn’t make sense: “Why does the Left hate Israel?” 
After all, “Israel is a liberal democracy,” extending “full rights to women, to gays, and to its many Arab citizens,” notes the popular radio host, author and PragerU founder. While, “like all countries, Israel is flawed,” when compared to most countries — not to mention its neighbors — “it is a civil rights paradise,” he says.
The reason, Prager explains, is that the Left “is not guided by a moral compass.” Instead, it is “guided by three other compasses,” which are “a power compass, a race compass, and a class compass.”
The “power compass” involves evaluating people and nations “on the basis of weak and strong,” with weakness meaning “you’re good,” and strength meaning “you’re bad.” By this logic, Israel and America are strong, and are therefore bad. The Palestinians, conversely, are regarded as weak, and are therefore good.
After pointing out that strength and weakness are irrelevant “when you are guided by a moral compass,” Prager discusses why “Israel was not a big issue for the left” 50 years ago, when they were “perceived as weak.” This perception changed “after the 1967 Six Day War in which Israel achieved a <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-39960461">stunning military victory</a>.” As Israel became strong, Israel became &#8220;bad.&#8221; 
With such a metric, Prager contends, “no matter how much terror Palestinians engaged in — <a href="https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/after-egyptair-four-hijackings-that-shook-israel-1.5424289">hijacking</a> airplanes, <a href="https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/massacre-begins-at-munich-olympics">murdering</a> eleven Israeli athletes and coaches at the 1972 Munich Olympics, blowing up Israelis in <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2001/aug/10/israel1">pizza parlors</a> and at <a href="https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/middle_east-jan-june02-mideast_01-17">weddings</a> — the Left&#8217;s position never changed.” Because the Palestinians were seen as weak, and Israel was seen as strong, “Palestinians good. Israel bad.”
Prager says that this viewpoint is “one of the three ways the left judges the world,” and that it can be tested by understanding that the United States is seen as bad because it is strong, and Third World countries that oppose the United States are seen as good because they are weak. 
Cuba, for example, “has been adored by the Left for decades,” despite the fact that “Cuba’s communist party has ruined Cuba, that Cubans have no civil rights, and Cuba is one of the poorest countries in the world.” The same calculus applied to North Vietnam in the 1960s, even though “America was trying to preserve the freedom of the South Vietnamese.”

Prager concludes his discussion of the “power compass” by stating that “the stronger Israel gets — as it effectively defends itself, as its economy grows, and its diplomatic position improves — the more the Left hates it.”
He then moves on to the second of the Left’s compasses: the “race compass,” saying that — in the same manner as weakness and strength are viewed as synonymous with good and evil — “the Left substitutes non-white and white for good and evil,” judging people not “by their actions, but by their race.” For this reason, Prager says, “the Left asserts that a black person cannot be racist, only a white person can be racist.” Because “Israelis are considered white and Palestinians are not white,” the Left has labeled Israel as evil, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/04/world/middleeast/gaza-rockets-israel.html">choosing</a> to “essentially ignore Palestinian terror” and “loudly condemn Israel’s responses to terror.”
Finally, Prager discusses the Left’s third compass, the “class compass,” judging “people’s actions based on their economic class,” with rich people and nations viewed as bad, and poor people and nations viewed as good. 
“This began,” Prager posits, “with Karl Marx, who divided the world by economic class, not moral behavior. To Marx and to Marxism, good and evil is entirely class-based. Good is defined as workers; evil is employers.” Therefore, according to the “class compass,” the Left hate Israel and America because “they are both wealthy.”
Prager concludes the video by warning against the increased destruction of our “moral compass” in favor of the Left’s three other compasses: “As fewer and fewer people perceive the world in terms of good and evil — substituting a power, race, or class compass for a moral compass — you will inevitably get more evil, and more hatred of the good — beginning with Israel and America, and ending with Western Civilization.”

America has lost an inarguably great man. Walter Williams, one of the nation’s great economists and public intellectuals, died in the early hours of Wednesday morning after teaching his final class at George Mason University on Tuesday. He was 84.
A self-described &#8220;crazy-ass man&#8221; and libertarian economist with a black belt in karate, he focused on government&#8217;s role in perpetuating racial inequality.
A ferocious defender of free markets and a powerful explainer of the virtues of liberty, Williams brought a personal toughness honed as a Philly cab driver to his work; a contrarianism born of growing up poor in the city’s racially segregated housing projects. But he never allowed himself to be a victim of his circumstances.
A disciple of Ludwig von Mises, F.A. Hayek and Milton Friedman, Williams worked for 40 years at George Mason University, putting his heart and soul into transforming the economics department into a highly respected center of free market scholars. Talking with Robert Chatfield of the Free To Choose Network, Williams said he tried to avoid using anything written within the last 40 years in his economics class. He wanted students to know that Mises, Hayek, and Friedman were right then, and they’re still right today.
A nationally syndicated columnist and author of ten books including his seminal work, &#8220;Race and Economics&#8221;, a highly acclaimed must-read on the subject, his research was rigorous and his writings bold and unequivocal. His book, The State Against Blacks, was made into the television documentary &#8220;Good Intentions&#8221; in 1985, with his most recent documentary, “Suffer No Fools” debuting in 2015. He was one of the few economists who knew how to engage with the public. 
A libertarian in the truest sense, Williams refused the title as a descriptor, saying &#8220;I just do my own thing,&#8221; when asked by Reason Magazine in 2011 whether he saw himself as part of the libertarian movement. 
In a moving elegy to his best and closest friend of more than half a century, Thomas Sowell wrote, “There was no one I trusted more or whose integrity I respected more. Since he was younger than me, I chose him to be my literary executor, to take control of my books after I was gone. But his death is a reminder that no one really has anything to say about such things.”
Sowell shared a running joke between he and Williams, that there was a time when the entire black conservative community would have only consisted of the two of them, “Walter used to say the two of us should never fly on the same plane otherwise the whole movement will disappear if the plane goes down.”
To misquote slightly a line from Hamlet, “He was a man, Horatio, take him for all in all, we shall not look upon his like again.”

PragerU’s latest <a href="https://www.prageru.com/video/whats-wrong-with-the-1619-project/">video</a> features Wilfred Reilly, an Associate Professor of Political Science at Kentucky State University, who discusses some of what he describes as the fundamental flaws of the Pulitzer Prize-winning The 1619 Project, published by The New York Times in 2019. Despite sharp criticism among some prominent historians, the project has been heavily promoted by the Times and has even begun to make its way into some school curricula.
Reilly begins by countering The 1619 Project&#8217;s central thesis — that “The United States was founded in 1619, when the first slave was brought to North America” — with some glaring questions: “What happened to 1776? To July 4th? The Declaration of Independence? George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison?”
In order to debunk the view promoted by The 1619 Project <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/18/insider/nikole-hannah-jones-1619.html">that</a> &#8220;one of the primary reasons the colonists decided to declare their independence from Britain was because they wanted to protect the institution of slavery&#8221; and <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/12/20/magazine/1619-intro.html">that</a> “Out of slavery — and the anti-Black racism it required — grew nearly everything that has truly made America exceptional.”
Reilly looks at three of the major claims made by the project.
The first is the idea that preserving slavery was one of the primary motives of the American Revolution. In response, Reilly begins by discussing the reasons the Founders sought independence, which included “taxation without representation, conflicts over debts from the French and Indian War, and the Stamp Act.”
“Probably most important,” according to Reilly, “was the burning desire to be free.” Slavery, conversely, “was <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/12/20/magazine/we-respond-to-the-historians-who-critiqued-the-1619-project.html">not under threat</a> from the British,” and “the subject of slavery was hotly debated at the Constitutional Convention.”
The second claim Reilly addresses is that slavery supposedly made America rich. Reilly first acknowledges that “slavery made some Americans rich,” citing Eli Yale as an example. However, Reilly then posits that “the institution of slavery didn’t make America rich,” and that the system of slavery actually “slowed the economic development of half the country.”

After citing economist <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Race-Culture-World-Thomas-Sowell/dp/0465067972">Thomas Sowell’s argument</a> that “the South was an economic backwater,” Reilly then moves on to remind viewers that “the cost of abolishing slavery was enormous,” both in terms of dollars and human life. He then concludes by pointing out that, 200 years since the Civil War, “the population of the country has grown almost 900% and our national GDP has increased 12,000%.”
The third 1619 Project claim Reilly slams is the “more philosophical than scholarly” view that “racism is an unchangeable part of America,” suggesting that “the United States is an inherently racist country that can’t overcome its flaws.”
Reilly then presents multiple counter-arguments to this “pernicious” viewpoint. Despite the fact that “progress has not always been smooth,” he states that “America is the most successful multi-racial country in history, the only white majority country to elect a black President — twice.” He questions why “<a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2017/02/14/african-immigrant-population-in-u-s-steadily-climbs/">two million black Africans</a> have come to America as legal immigrants — from countries like Nigeria — in the last 50 years, and have become one of the most successful groups in the country,” if America is truly an “evil, racist country.” Finally, he praises the multi-racial efforts made to advance the cause of racial equality.
Reilly ends by remembering “great black leaders of the past — Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, Martin Luther King,” none of whom “believed that racism was America’s defining characteristic,” he says. The flaws he listed, and others, says Reilly, is why a group of distinguished historians condemned The 1619 Project as “<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/12/20/magazine/we-respond-to-the-historians-who-critiqued-the-1619-project.html">a displacement of historical understanding by ideology</a>.” The famous civil rights leaders and the historians, Reilly concludes, were right.

The entire content library for PragerU will now be available on The Daily Wire’s website as part of a new partnership between the two organizations, the latest move in The Daily Wire’s effort to provide conservatives and independent thinkers with even more content. 
As part of the partnership, The Daily Wire will now host the best content PragerU has to offer, including the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/show/5-minute-videos">Five-Minute Videos</a>, which feature engaging educational lessons, hosted by thought leaders and conservative figures, on various hot-button issues. To date, PragerU’s five-minute videos have racked up over 4 billion views and counting.  
“This new partnership with PragerU is just a taste of the kind of content we are committed to bringing to our audience as we expand our efforts to replace the legacy media,” said Jeremy Boreing, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of The Daily Wire. “We have big plans for 2021 that we can’t wait to share — this is just the start of it.”
In addition to hosting the acclaimed five-minute videos, The Daily Wire will also now be home to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/show/the-candace-owens-show">The Candace Owens Show</a> and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/show/the-book-club-with-michael-knowles">Book Club With Michael Knowles</a>. In a new <a href="https://www.prageru.com/video/you-cant-be-free-without-this/">PragerU video</a>, Kelly Shackelford, president of First Liberty — the nation&#8217;s largest legal firm dedicated exclusively to protecting individual liberty — warns viewers of the growing threat to religious freedom in the United States.
Shackelford begins by stating that the assumed existence of religious freedom in the United States — where “you can be a Protestant, a Catholic, a Jew, a Muslim, or a Wiccan. You can believe in anything—or nothing” — is, unfortunately, no longer a reality. Now, Shackelford says, it “seems like almost every week a new dispute arises between people of faith and government agencies alleging that believers are violating the rights of non-believers, or simply violating government edicts.”
Citing <a href="https://www.digitalhistory.uh.edu/disp_textbook.cfm?smtID=3&amp;psid=151">Common Sense</a>, Thomas Paine’s influential 1776 pamphlet, Shackelford points out that this newfound disregard for religious freedom is antithetical to the principles at the heart of America’s founding. Moreover, that it “wasn’t an accident” that the first freedom listed in the Bill of Rights — beginning with “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…” — focuses on religious liberty.
Shackelford then compares “the two great revolutions of the 18th century,” quoting British historian <a href="https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1998-mar-08-bk-26573-story.html">Paul Johnson</a> in order to draw a “stark and telling contrast” between the role of religion in the American and French revolutions:
<blockquote>The essential difference between the American Revolution and the French Revolution is that the American Revolution, in its origins, was a religious event, whereas the French Revolution was an anti-religious event. That fact was to shape the American Revolution&#8230;and determine the nature of the independent state it brought into being.</blockquote>
Despite being achieved as “one of the main goals of the American Revolution,” Shackelford warns that “freedom of religion” <a href="https://www.heritage.org/religious-liberty/heritage-explains/religious-freedom-whats-stake-if-we-lose-it">has</a> now “morphed into freedom from religion,” thereby achieving one of the “main goals of the French Revolution.” 
The danger, Shackelford argues, is that an attack on religious freedom is a “totalitarian ‘tell,’” a sign that “they’re coming for all your freedom.” This is why the Founders “were so insistent that religious liberty be in the Constitution,” since “freedom of liberty was tantamount to freedom of thought. If you aren&#8217;t free to think as you wish, you can&#8217;t claim to be free.”
Shackelford continues by drawing from historical examples of the suppression of religious freedom, and how this relates to a broader impact upon all freedoms. He discusses the closure of churches and the “control of all religious life” under Soviet <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/belief/2017/oct/26/why-the-soviet-attempt-to-stamp-out-religion-failed">rule</a>, as well as religious limitations <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-xi-jinping-is-attacking-religion-in-china-2018-11">enforced</a> under the Chinese communist regime.

The reason for such anti-religious sentiment, Shackelford says, is that religion “challenges the authority of the state more than any other freedom,” and that “people who adhere to a religion believe that there’s something higher than the state, and no repressive government can tolerate such a belief.”
Shackelford uses the argument that “religion is the first target of those who want ever more power” to warn everyone — even those who aren’t religious — that “if you care about freedom, you should care deeply about religious liberty.” 
He concludes be providing an insight into the “troubling trends” he has noticed as he works to “protect religious liberty,” saying that “eight years ago, my case load was 47; last year it was over 300.” Shackelford provides a few recent examples, including the suspension and then termination of a Washington <a href="https://firstliberty.org/cases/coachkennedy/">high school football coach</a> for “going to a knee after a football game to say a brief, silent prayer,” an <a href="https://firstliberty.org/cases/heimish-of-houston/">attempt</a> by the City of Houston to “ban a small Orthodox Jewish community from worshipping in the home of its rabbi,” and a court in Maryland <a href="https://firstliberty.org/cases/bladensburg/">ordering</a> the removal of a “peace cross” which has “stood for almost 100 years in honor of 49 young men who died fighting in World War I.”
The <a href="https://www.prageru.com/video/you-cant-be-free-without-this/">video</a> ends with both a warning and cause for hope:
<blockquote>America is also still standing. But it won&#8217;t be for much longer, not as the free country the Founders envisioned, if we don&#8217;t take these threats to religious freedom seriously. The great historian of post-revolutionary America, Alexis de Tocqueville, understood this very well. &#8220;When…men attack religious beliefs, they are following their emotions not their interests. Tyranny may be able to do without faith, but freedom cannot.&#8221;</blockquote>
