Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has cut over $30 million in &#8220;frivolous and unnecessary” government grants and contracts in the last three weeks, the Department of Homeland Security told The Daily Wire. 
The department said that it had cut a total of $31,692,166 in spending between August 22 and September 12. The savings were from de-obligated grants and contracts targeted as part of President Donald Trump&#8217;s efforts to cut down on government waste, the department told The Daily Wire.
“In just three weeks, Secretary Noem has saved the taxpayer more than $30 million. That’s more than $1 million per DAY,” said Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin. “Under President Trump and Secretary Noem, it is no longer open season on the American taxpayer at DHS. The Trump administration is draining the swamp, restoring accountability to the federal government, and putting hardworking Americans FIRST again.”
Under the Trump administration, all department contracts worth over $100,000 have to be approved by Noem.
In total, the Department of Homeland Security said it has saved over $12 billion during Noem’s tenure. In total, that equals out to saving about $50 million per day during the Trump administration.
Homeland Security also said that it was providing savings to American taxpayers by deporting illegal aliens.
“These savings figures don’t even include the additional savings from DHS’s immigration enforcement efforts since President Trump resumed office,” the department said.
According to an estimate from the Federation for American Immigration Reform, the net cost of illegal immigration on American citizens is around $150 billion per year. These costs include schooling, health care, and food assistance for illegal aliens.
“Taxes paid by illegal aliens only cover around 17.2 percent of the costs they create for American citizens, bringing the net cost to $150.7 billion a year. For every dollar in taxes paid by illegal aliens, they and their dependents consume six dollars in benefits and services,” the organization <a href="https://www.fairus.org/new-fair-report-annual-costs-illegal-immigration-soars-1507-billion-year">found</a>.
The Trump administration is looking to use new funds allocated by the Big, Beautiful Bill to help increase deportations.

Missouri Republicans sent a new congressional district map to the desk of Governor Mike Kehoe on Friday.
The map is expected to create one more Republican-favored congressional district in the deep red state. The Senate passed the map 21-11 on Friday after the House passed the same map earlier in the week. President Donald Trump praised Missouri lawmakers for passing the map.
“Thank you very much to the Great State of Missouri for the redistricting, which will, hopefully, give us an additional Seat in Congress! A new, much fairer, and much improved, Congressional Map, has now overwhelmingly passed both Chambers of the Missouri Legislature,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
Trump added that the map “will help send an additional MAGA Republican to Congress in the 2026 Midterm Elections. It is wonderful to see Republicans in the &#8216;Show Me State&#8217; standing up to Save our Country, and, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN.”
The map is expected to yield a 7-1 congressional seat advantage for Republicans as opposed to the current 6-2 map.
Senator Nick Schroer, a Republican and member of the state’s conservative Freedom Caucus, told The Daily Wire that Republicans previously created a special carve-out district for Kansas City area Democrat Rep. Emanuel Cleaver last time the maps were passed. The new maps will not split St. Charles County or Warren County like the current map does.
“So by way of keeping these counties back together, creating a map that is compact and contiguous, in essence, it&#8217;s making that seat more competitive,” Schroer told The Daily Wire.
While Democrats accused Trump of meddling in the state’s politics, Republican lawmakers praised him for his advocacy for new maps in the state.
“To that point, this has been absolutely refreshing to have a president that is so involved and communicates so well to state legislatures,” Rep. Holly Jones told The Daily Wire. “That has been amazing that the administration wants to work with us so closely.”
That sentiment was echoed by Rep. Justin Sparks.
“Having a presidential administration recognize that in order to get his mandate and his agenda passed that he has to work with the state legislatures to get that accomplished has been refreshing and very effective, and we&#8217;ve been very happy to help,” Sparks told The Daily Wire.
Texas passed new maps earlier this year that are expected to create five more Republican-favored seats.

Utah Republican Governor Spencer Cox said Friday that the assassination of Charlie Kirk could be a “turning point” on whether the country would embrace free and open debate or turn to political violence. 
Cox made the comments during a press conference announcing that 22-year-old Tyler Robinson had been arrested for the murder of Kirk on Wednesday. After announcing the arrest, Cox delivered an impassioned plea, declaring that Kirk’s killing was a direct attack on the values he championed.
“This is certainly about the tragic death, assassination, political assassination, of Charlie Kirk,” he said. “But it is also much bigger than an attack on an individual. It is an attack on all of us.  It is an attack on the American experiment. It is an attack on our ideals. This cuts to the very foundation of who we are, of who we have been, and who we could be in better times.”
“Political violence is different than any other type of violence, for lots of different reasons,” Cox added. “One, because in the very act that Charlie championed of expression, that freedom of expression that is enshrined in our founding documents, in having his life taken in that very act makes it more difficult for people to feel like they can share their ideas, that they can speak freely.”
Cox added that in the hours following Kirk’s killing, he was as angry as he had ever been, but that his attitude changed when he reflected on Kirk’s own advocacy of forgiveness, the importance of debate, and advocacy of non-violent disagreement.
Kirk, a devout Christian, frequently urged his supporters to treat their political opponents with respect and peacefully engage with them. 
Cox highlighted how no riots or looting had broken out in the wake of Kirk’s killing.
“I want you to look at how Utahns reacted the last two nights. There was no rioting.  There was no looting. There were no cars set on fire,” Cox said. “There was no violence. There were vigils and prayers, and people coming together to share humanity. And that, ladies and gentlemen, I believe is the answer to this.  We can return violence with violence, we can return hate with hate. And that’s the problem with political violence: It metastasizes because we can always point the finger at the other side. And at some point, we have to find an off-ramp, or it’s going to get much, much worse.”
Cox ended his remarks with a call for everyone to follow Kirk’s advocacy of peaceful debate. 
“History will dictate if this is a turning point for our country,” he said. “But every single one of us gets to choose right now, if this is a turning point for us. We get to make decisions. We have our agency. And I desperately call on every American Republican, Democrat, liberal, progressive, conservative, MAGA, all of us to please, please, please follow what Charlie taught me.”

‘An Attack On All Of Us’: Utah Governor Calls Kirk Assassination A ‘Turning Point’ For The Nation

Florida officials promised Thursday to discipline teachers who celebrate the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.
Florida Commissioner of Education Anastasios Kamoutsas sent a memo to school superintendents saying that there would be consequences for employees who celebrate or mock the killing of Kirk, who was gunned down on Wednesday while holding an event at Utah Valley University.
“It has been brought to my attention that some Florida educators have posted despicable comments on social media regarding the horrific assassination of Charlie Kirk. These few are not a reflection of the great, high-quality teachers who make up the vast majority of Florida&#8217;s educators,” he wrote in the memo. “Nevertheless, I will be conducting an investigation of every educator who engages in this vile, sanctionable behavior.”

While tributes for Kirk poured in following news of his death, many leftists responded by mocking Kirk or celebrating his death. A dean of students at Middle Tennessee State University was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/tennessee-university-dean-fired-after-saying-she-had-no-sympathy-for-charlie-kirk?author=Leif+Le+Mahieu&amp;category=undefined&amp;elementPosition=1&amp;row=3&amp;rowHeadline=Latest+News&amp;rowType=Vertical+Carousel&amp;title=Tennessee+University+Dean+Fired+After+Saying+She+Had+%E2%80%98No+Sympathy%E2%80%99+For+Charlie+Kirk">fired</a> Wednesday after she said she had “zero sympathy” for Kirk.
Kamoutsas noted that while teachers have First Amendment rights, comments they make could violate professional codes of conduct that they are required to follow.
“Although educators have First Amendment rights, these rights do not extend without limit into their professional duties,” he wrote in the memo. “An educator&#8217;s personal views that are made public may undermine the trust of the students and families that they serve.”
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis praised Kamoutsas for the memo.
“Celebrating the assassination of a 31-year-old father of two young kids is disturbing; that teachers would be among those who do so is completely unacceptable,” he <a href="https://x.com/GovRonDeSantis/status/1966210462011576409">said</a>. “Glad [Kamoutsas] is bringing accountability. It is sad that we’ve seen a number of teachers across America celebrate Charlie Kirk’s murder.”
Other individuals across the country have also lost their jobs over posts made about Kirk’s death, including at the University of Mississippi.
&#8220;Yesterday, a University of Mississippi staff member re-shared hurtful, insensitive comments on social media regarding the tragic murder of Charlie Kirk,” University of Mississippi Chancellor Glenn Boyce <a href="https://x.com/OleMiss/status/1966202655706865785">said</a> Thursday. &#8220;These comments run completely counter to our institutional values of civility, fairness, and respecting the dignity of each person. We condemn these actions, and this staff member is no longer employed by the university.”

Florida Pledges To Hold Teachers ‘Accountable’ Who Celebrate Charlie Kirk’s Death

While urging Americans to remember the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, top Republicans on the House Homeland Security Committee are urging vigilance over threats facing the country due to “open-border policies” pushed during the Biden administration. 
The lawmakers are calling for a resolute commitment to border security after a massive surge in individuals on the terror watchlist crossing the border under former President Joe Biden. The lawmakers praised the Trump administration for its actions to lock down the border.
“As a lifelong New Yorker, &#8216;Never Forget&#8217; is more than a phrase of remembrance for me; it is a call to action,” committee Chair Andrew Garbarino (R-NY) told The Daily Wire. “Today, as we honor the nearly 3,000 innocent lives taken by al Qaeda terrorists on 9/11, we also reaffirm our commitment to DHS&#8217;s core counterterrorism mission. Our nation still faces heightened and evolving threats more than two decades after 9/11, particularly following four years of open-border policies.”
From the start of fiscal year 2021 to the end of Biden’s presidency, border patrol agents encountered around 400 individuals on the terror watchlist at the border. At least 2 million illegals who were known “gotaways” entered the country in that same period. From 2017-2020, only 14 individuals on the terror watchlist were apprehended at the border, <a href="https://homeland.house.gov/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/December-24-SS.pdf">according</a> to the committee. 
These threats have come from a variety of countries. It was previously <a href="https://homeland.house.gov/2025/06/26/homeland-republicans-applaud-house-passage-of-rep-greenes-special-interest-alien-reporting-act/">reported</a> that Biden released into the country around 50% of the 1,504 Iranian nationals who were stopped at the border during his presidency. Over the summer, Immigration and Customs Enforcement <a href="https://www.ice.gov/news/releases/ice-arrests-tajikistan-born-russian-national-foreign-fugitive-suspected-being-member">arrested</a> a Tajikistani national suspected of being a member of al Qaeda. The man crossed the border and was released under Biden. 
Garbarino will be leading a visit of Homeland Security members to Ground Zero and the 9/11 Memorial and Museum on Thursday. He praised the work of federal, state, and local law enforcement to protect American communities. 
&#8220;These brave men and women deserve our continued support as they put their lives on the line every day. Alongside the Trump administration, the House Committee on Homeland Security is working to keep our borders secure for years to come — because border security is national security,&#8221; he said. 
Subcommittee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence Chairman August Pfluger told The Daily Wire that the Biden administration’s “reckless open-border policies” led to “blinking red” danger to our security. 
“While President Trump’s Administration has taken strong, decisive action to identify and deport many of these individuals, an unsettling truth remains, we still don’t know how many terrorists may have slipped through the cracks under President Biden’s watch and are now living among us,” he said.

On 9/11, Republicans Warn About Lingering Danger From Biden’s ‘Open-Border Policies’

A dean at a university in Tennessee was fired on Wednesday after she said she had “zero sympathy” following the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. 
Middle Tennessee State University Associate Dean of Students Laura Sosh-Lightsy was fired for “inappropriate and callous” social media posts about the killing of Kirk, the university confirmed to The Daily Wire. According to screenshots of posts shared online by Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Sosh-Lightsy wrote, “Looks like ol’ Charlie spoke his fate into existence. Hate begets hate. ZERO sympathy.”

Sosh-Lightsy’s posts <a href="https://x.com/matthewhurtt/status/1965939113162592469">were</a> first flagged by Matthew Hurtt, an MTSU alumnus and director of the Leadership Institute. According to another post shared by Hurtt, Sosh-Lightsy wrote, “I’m not celebrating the loss of Charlie Kirk’s life. Violence is not the answer. I’m celebrating the loss of his message of violence in an increasingly violent world, which is partially because of him.”
Those comments came after Kirk was gunned down while speaking at Utah Valley University. A manhunt is still ongoing for the individual who shot Kirk. Many leftists took to social media to mock Kirk or celebrate his death. 
Sosh-Lightsy’s firing was announced by Middle Tennessee State University President Sidney McPhee, who said that she was fired “immediately” and that she had done damage to the university’s credibility with students and the public. 
“An MTSU employee today offered inappropriate and callous comments on social media concerning the horrific and tragic murder of Charlie Kirk,” McPhee said. “The comments by this employee, who worked in a position of trust directly with students, were inconsistent with our values and have undermined the university’s credibility and reputation with our students, faculty, staff and the community at large. This employee has been fired effective immediately. We extend our deepest sympathies to the Kirk family.”
Sosh-Lightsy’s profile was removed from the university’s Office of Student Conduct and Care Page sometime after the firing. According to her LinkedIn page, she had worked at Middle Tennessee State University for over twenty years and was in charge of student conduct and behavioral intervention plans. 
Her firing came after <a href="https://x.com/VoteMarsha/status/1965946930753945875">pressure</a> from Blackburn and other Tennessee Republicans. 
“Charlie Kirk was an inspiration for so many young people to speak up and work towards a better country, and nowhere was that more true than our college campuses,” Blackburn <a href="https://x.com/VoteMarsha/status/1965946930753945875">wrote</a> on X. “She should be fired tomorrow.”
Republican State Rep. Jason Zachary, an alumnus of MTSU, also called for Sosh-Lightsy’s firing. After the university announced the firing, he praised the leadership at the school.
“Thank you [President McPhee] for your leadership and decisive action,” he <a href="https://x.com/JasonZacharyTN/status/1966090666905334095">posted</a> on X. “Our leaders in higher education must hold faculty accountable and ensure that our public institutions reflect Tennessee values [MTSU] has led the way. Well done.”
