Forget ‘Starships.’ Nicki Minaj could be headed straight for the White House.
The Trump administration teased the rapper as the next press secretary.
“Ladies and gentlemen, I think we may have found the new White House Press Secretary! Nicki Minaj,” Steven Cheung, the White House director of communications, joked Sunday on X, alongside a video of the two sitting across a table aboard Air Force One.
The official White House account also played into the fun by replying with the eyes emoji.
In the roughly two-minute clip, Cheung questioned Minaj in the style of a mock job interview. Minaj was traveling with President Donald Trump on Sunday ahead of a campaign rally in Michigan.
Asked how the economy is doing under Trump, Minaj credited the president’s business background.
“Well, we have a president who understands economics, first of all,” Minaj said. “If he can do that himself, with his own finances, surely he knows what to do with the country.”
When Cheung asked whether anyone works harder than Trump, Minaj answered, “Absolutely not.”
The post appeared to bring some humor to a rocky stretch for the White House press office after Karoline Leavitt’s departure as press secretary in August. Earlier this month, Trump picked conservative commentator Katie Zacharia to replace her, but Zacharia left the job just five days after starting. Her only press briefing ended after she took questions from three reporters. Ultimately, Zacharia left on good terms with the White House and is said to be potentially transitioning into a new role for the White House.
Conservative podcaster Miranda Devine played into the humor by putting focus on Cheung instead. “Yes! I think [Steven Cheung] makes a great White House press secretary.”
For Minaj, the exchange was the latest public display of support for Trump. The rapper has become one of his most visible celebrity backers, appearing alongside him in January at the Trump Accounts Summit at the Treasury Department.
At the event, she praised Trump’s new policy, saying, “If I had access to something like this, my whole life would be different. So now I’m thinking about those kids who are bright and aren’t born with a bank account or wealthy relatives or parents, but they have so much to offer this world. Now they get to have some sort of hope.”
Minaj, a California resident, found herself in the Trump circle after she said she got the cold shoulder from California Governor Gavin Newsom. She then contacted Trump’s communications team, which received her warmly and cemented her support for the president.
