President Trump sure sounds confident that Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report won’t be as damaging as the president’s critics have hoped. In fact, Trump’s now openly demanding that the “ridiculous” report, which Mueller is expected to deliver to Attorney General William Barr “any day now,” be released to the public.
Speaking to reporters Wednesday, Trump addressed Mueller’s highly anticipated report. “Let it come out, let people see it. Let’s see whether or not it’s legit,” Trump said, the Associated Press reports.
Trump taunted the special counsel, suggesting he is “look[ing] forward” to seeing what Mueller came up with, while also dismissively describing it as an illegitimate effort to undermine his presidency by unelected bureaucrats. After having won “one of the greatest elections of all time in the history of this country,” Trump said, some “man out of the blue” who “never got a vote” has been given authority to a write a partisan report.
Trump’s call for the report to be released is supported by the House, which unanimously passed a resolution last week for Mueller’s report to be made public, though Barr is not obligated to comply to the House’s demands.
As AP notes, Mueller is expected “any day now” to deliver his report, which will outline his findings on any alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election, Trump campaign “collusion” with the Russians, and obstruction of justice by the president.
So far, the charges Mueller has brought against Trump associates have mostly been unrelated to the campaign or “process” violations incurred during the special counsel’s investigation. No evidence of “collusion” has publicly emerged after the nearly two-year investigation.
“Mueller is required to produce a confidential report that at a minimum explains decisions about who was and was not prosecuted,” AP reports. “Attorney General William Barr is then expected to produce his own report for Congress and has said he wants to make public as much of Mueller’s findings as he can under the law.”
Trump has been hammering the Mueller investigation repeatedly in public statements, frequently blasting out condemnations of the “witch hunt” and highlighting developments that undermine its credibility. Wednesday night, Trump tweeted out a quote from Fox Business Network’s “Kennedy”: “The reason we have the Special Counsel investigation is that James Comey (a dirty cop) leaked his memos to a friend, who leaked them to the press, on purpose.” The whole thing, Trump declared, is “Totally illegal!”
On Monday, Trump drew attention to a new poll finding an increasing number of Americans agreeing with him that the special counsel’s probe has devolved into a partisan witch hunt. “Wow! A Suffolk/USA Today Poll, just out, states, ‘50% of Americans AGREE that Robert Mueller’s investigation is a Witch Hunt.’ @MSNBC,” Trump tweeted. “Very few think it is legit! We will soon find out?”
The real “collusion” scandal that has emerged related to the 2016 campaign, he suggested last week, is the Democrats’ “collusion” with Fusion GPS and former British intelligence agent Christopher Steele to produce the salacious and still unverified Trump-Russia dossier that largely prompted the collusion narrative.
