After leaked footage of his embarrassing, prolonged meltdown during the breaks in his show from an August 29 broadcast went viral, MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell responded Wednesday with a rather refreshing, brutally honest apology.
“A better anchorman and a better person would’ve had a better reaction to technical difficulties. I’m sorry,” tweeted O’Donnell.
O’Donnell’s apology came in response to eight minutes of leaked footage showing O’Donnell becoming increasingly unraveled over technical issues on his show, The Last Word. Media watchdog site Mediaite published the footage on Wednesday — and it instantly went viral.
“What’s going on, why am I losing this, why don’t I have sound?!” says the irate host, whose face looks like he’s about to commit mass murder.
“Who’s asking for a Labor Day rundown in my ear? God dammit!” he fumes.
At one point the host takes his frustration out on his poor desk; at another point, he stands as if he is going to charge whoever’s in the control room, which he repeatedly complained was “OUT OF CONTROL!”
But the best moment is when someone, somewhere decided to start hammering something. The host absolutely loses his mind. Here’s the transcript and highlight footage of the moment:
STOP THE HAMMERING UP THERE. WHO’S GOT A HAMMER? WHERE IS IT? WHERE’S THE HAMMER? GO UP ON THE OTHER FLOOR. SOMEBODY GO UP THERE AND STOP THE HAMMERING. STOP THE HAMMERING. I’LL GO DOWN TO THE GODDAMNED FLOOR MYSELF AND STOP IT, KEEP THE GODDAMNED COMMERCIAL BREAK GOING. CALL F**KING PHIL GRIFFIN, I DON’T CARE WHO THE F**K YOU HAVE TO CALL. STOP THE HAMMERING. EMPTY OUT THE GODDAMNED CONTROL ROOM AND FIND OUT WHERE THIS IS GOING ON. … F**king out of control sh*t.
